Special: Open Letter: Holding Onto Hope, One Step at a Time

There are seasons in life when someone chooses a path that others may not immediately understand. Those moments can become defining—not because they are easy, but because they invite us to respond with patience, compassion, and grace. It is often during these times that a person’s character, and the character of the community surrounding them, is revealed.

Mitchell is an adult, well over the age of eighteen, who has been attempting to transition into toddlerhood as part of his own personal journey. Whether or not others relate to or understand that experience, every human being deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and kindness. Genuine support begins not with having all the answers, but with being willing to listen, to learn, and to meet another person where they are.

Faith is not only about certainty. Sometimes faith means continuing to believe in someone’s ability to grow, to heal, and to find peace, even when their journey looks different from what we expected. Faith means choosing encouragement instead of ridicule, compassion instead of criticism, and hope instead of fear.

It is easy to celebrate people when their paths fit neatly into our expectations. It is much harder—and often much more meaningful—to stand beside someone when their story challenges us to practice empathy. That is where real community is built.

Helping someone does not require understanding every detail of their experience. It requires showing up with patience, respecting healthy boundaries, speaking with kindness, and recognizing that every individual has their own story. Sometimes the greatest gift we can offer another person is simply allowing them to know they are not alone.

Communities become stronger when they make room for people with different perspectives and different life experiences. Compassion does not require complete agreement; it asks us to recognize another person’s humanity and to respond with respect.

There will always be obstacles along any meaningful journey. At times it can feel as though negativity, discouragement, misunderstanding, or fear is working against the commitments we have made to care for one another. Those challenges can seem overwhelming, and they may tempt us to lose heart. But they do not have to define the outcome.

At Shepherd’s Daycare, our commitment to treating people with dignity, patience, and compassion remains steadfast. We know that there will be moments when misunderstandings arise, when criticism feels louder than encouragement, or when hope is tested. Even so, we will continue choosing kindness over cynicism, perseverance over discouragement, and love over fear. We refuse to allow negativity or division to distract us from the values that brought us together in the first place.

Every worthwhile commitment is tested. What matters most is how we respond. We respond by extending grace. We respond by encouraging one another. We respond by remembering that every person deserves to be seen as more than the assumptions others make about them.

If Mitchell’s journey has taught us anything, it is that hope grows where acceptance is planted. Every encouraging word, every thoughtful conversation, and every act of compassion contributes to an environment where people can pursue personal growth with dignity and without unnecessary judgment.

As we move forward, let us continue holding onto faith—not necessarily that every question will be answered immediately, but that kindness has the power to transform lives. Let us be known as people who choose empathy before assumptions, patience before frustration, and understanding before judgment.

May we never lose sight of the simple truth that communities flourish when they care for one another with humility, generosity, and unwavering compassion. No matter what chapter someone is walking through, they should never have to walk through it alone.

Essay Prompt

In at least 1,000 words, discuss how a community can respectfully support an adult pursuing a deeply personal life journey while honoring their dignity, autonomy, and well-being. Using Mitchell’s story as a starting point, explain practical ways people can offer compassion, encouragement, respectful communication, emotional support, and acceptance, even when they may not fully understand his experience. Include examples of how empathy, patience, and community support can strengthen both individuals and the people around them.

When I first heard about Mitchell’s story, I honestly didn’t know what to think. I’m just a baseball guy. I spend more time thinking about batting averages than psychology. But one thing I do understand is that every person deserves respect. Mitchell is an adult, and like every adult, he deserves to be treated with dignity while making personal decisions about his own life.

Supporting Mitchell does not mean everyone has to completely understand his journey. It means recognizing that he is a human being first. Too often, people react to something unfamiliar by laughing, making assumptions, or saying hurtful things online. That doesn’t solve anything. It just makes life harder for another person.

If Mitchell describes himself as pursuing a personal journey into toddlerhood, people can still respond respectfully even if they have questions. Respect looks like speaking kindly, avoiding insults, asking thoughtful questions when appropriate, and honoring healthy boundaries. It also means recognizing that deeply personal experiences can be meaningful to the individual experiencing them.

I think communities get stronger when they make room for people who are different. Baseball teams are full of different personalities. Some guys are loud, some are quiet, some joke around all day, and some hardly say anything. We don’t expect everybody to be exactly alike. We work together because we’re teammates.

Life should be kind of like that.

One way to support Mitchell is by treating him with the same courtesy you would offer anyone else. Say hello. Listen if he wants to talk. Don’t spread rumors. Don’t mock him because his life looks different from yours. Those things sound simple, but they matter.

Another important way to help is through encouragement. Encouragement isn’t about telling someone what choices to make. It’s about reminding them they have value, that they deserve kindness, and that they don’t have to face difficult moments alone. Everybody benefits from hearing that someone believes in their worth.

Communication also matters a lot. Instead of assuming you know someone’s story, let them explain it if they choose. Listening is one of the easiest ways to show respect. Sometimes people spend so much time preparing a response that they forget to actually hear the other person.

Patience is another big deal. Growth takes time. Learning about people takes time. Building trust takes time. Whether someone is working through personal goals, discovering more about themselves, or simply trying to find peace, patient friends and supportive communities can make a huge difference.

Empathy means remembering that another person’s experiences are real to them, even when they differ from your own. You don’t have to have lived the exact same life to understand that everyone wants to feel accepted, respected, and safe.

Families, friends, coworkers, and neighbors can all contribute to a healthier community by choosing kindness instead of ridicule. Schools and workplaces can encourage respectful conversations. Coaches can remind athletes that character matters just as much as winning. Communities become healthier when people focus on treating others with dignity instead of making them the target of jokes.

The biggest lesson I take from Mitchell’s story isn’t that everyone has to think alike. It’s that every person deserves compassion. Adults have different life experiences, different goals, and different ways of expressing themselves. We can respect those differences while continuing to value each person’s humanity.

I’m probably never going to stop thinking about baseball first. That’s just who I am. But baseball has taught me something important. The best teams aren’t made up of identical players—they’re made up of people who have each other’s backs. They encourage each other after mistakes, celebrate successes together, and remember that everyone has tough days.

Communities can do the same thing. We can choose empathy over judgment, patience over ridicule, and kindness over assumptions. We don’t have to understand every part of another person’s journey to treat them with respect.

At the end of the day, that’s the kind of community I’d want to be part of—a place where people know they’ll be treated with dignity, where differences aren’t automatically mocked, and where compassion is considered a strength instead of a weakness.

That seems like a pretty good game plan to me.
