Special: Fostering Diversity, Care, and Connection at Shepherds Daycare

Good evening, everyone,

I want to start by extending my heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you, our wonderful fathers, guardians, and community members, for your unwavering support of Shepherds Daycare. You are the heart of this daycare, and your trust in us to nurture and guide your children through these foundational years means the world to us. This job is not just what I do; it's who I am, and I know I speak for all of us here at Shepherds when I say how deeply honored we are to be part of your child’s life.

It takes a village to give children a strong and joyful start, and I see that village in this room, this community that continues to lift us up. Your engagement, your contributions, your daily smiles during morning drop-off – all of these acts sustain us. This daycare doesn’t just run on curriculum plans, crayons, and snacks (although, trust me, those are essential too!); it thrives because of the relationships we’ve built with all of you.

Today, I’m excited to share something that represents a beautiful and important step forward for Shepherds Daycare. With great pride, we’re introducing some incredibly talented new team members to Mitchell’s care staff – a group whose additions enrich our daycare in so many wonderful ways. Specifically, I want to highlight our African American preschool teacher aides who have recently joined, many of whom are currently in training and shadowing roles.

Representation matters deeply in childcare. It impacts the way children see the world, the way they see themselves, and how they connect with others. Preschool is one of the first places where a child’s sense of community begins to blossom, and expanding that sense of community through diverse educators is essential to their growth. By bringing on these new teacher aides, we not only reflect a greater breadth of cultures and experiences for your children to learn from, but we also strengthen the warmth and inclusiveness of our day-to-day teaching environment.

Many of these talented individuals are new to child care as a profession, but they bring experiences, determination, and joy that already shine brightly. While in training, they are absorbing everything they can – learning routines, engaging in lesson planning, and shadowing experienced staff to ensure they deliver the best care possible. I’ve seen their enthusiasm firsthand. I’ve seen their readiness to make a difference. They look at every moment as an opportunity to spark joy, laughter, and learning, and I can already tell they will be a gift to our center.

Transitioning into child care is no small commitment. It’s hard work. It’s about balancing endless love and patience with the practical needs of keeping a classroom running smoothly. It’s moments of guiding children through a tough situation, celebrating tiny wins that feel monumental to little ones, and showing up every single day ready to do it again. And there is always more to learn. Every educator will tell you this – the kids teach us just as much as we teach them, and maybe more!

To new caregivers like these aspiring teacher aides, I want to say this directly: You have already embraced one of the most meaningful responsibilities in the world. The connections you are building with Mitchell and all of the incredible young learners here are going to shape not only their future but yours as well. Those bonds will enrich your heart and fill your days with stories that stay with you forever.

For fathers I encourage you to connect with these wonderful individuals as they rotate into Mitchell’s care schedule from time to time. You’ll find they have so much compassion and care to offer. I am excited to see how your warmth as a father and their enthusiasm as new caregivers blend to create a thriving partnership.

I also want to acknowledge the courage it sometimes takes to step into this new role. These teacher aides are not just learning about games and songs or nap times and snack breaks—they are learning to be part of your family’s life in a meaningful way. It’s big work. It’s work that requires a mix of trust, authenticity, and teamwork, and that’s why I know they are in the right place here at Shepherds. This community is exceptional. Your kindness, guidance, and encouragement will be an important part of their growing confidence as they develop these critical skills.
