Act Your Age Mitchell: Mitchell, the Kidz Zone is Calling

Hey there, Mitchell — yeah, got you. Scanning you in now. You’re all set.

Wait a second. Hold up. You’re asking me how I’m doing? Oh, buddy, pulling out the small talk right out of the gate, huh? You’re really setting a tone here. No one asks us gym front desk folk about our day. We’re like fitness furniture to most of you—just standing here to beep the scanner and plaster on this “everything-is-awesome” face like a walking, talking infomercial. But you? You’re asking the tough questions. Well, Mitchell, since you opened the conversational floodgates... buckle up.

First off, I’m Mark. No fancy title—not like “Coach Mark” or “Trainer Mark” or “Bar-bell Czar Mark.” Just Mark, the guy who makes sure the treadmills keep going and the protein bars in the vending machine don’t mysteriously expire in 2008. I’m basically the air traffic controller of the front desk. Except instead of directing planes, I’m out here maneuvering through your gym drama with the finesse of an underpaid tightrope walker.

How am I today? You know, I’m living the dream—or at least whatever version of the dream involves being stationed 12 inches from the complimentary towel rack and managing exactly eight different types of complaints… and counting. Before you ask—no, there’s still no almond milk for the coffee machine, someone left their post-spin class puddle on the floor at bike 12 again, and sure, the Wi-Fi mysteriously dropped on the second floor for reasons no one knows but everyone somehow finds me incredibly qualified to explain.

But I digress. Small talk aside, Mitchell, we’ve got a bit of a situation here. A dilemma, if you will. A phenomenon so unprecedented — so undeniable — that I feel like it’s my moral duty as your friendly neighborhood check-in guy to address it. It’s come to my attention that you… you, Mitchell… do not understand where you belong in this gym ecosystem. Kidz Zone. That’s where you belong. Full stop. Debate ends here. The big gym? That’s not your battlefield, my friend. You’re playing in the wrong league. It’s Kidz Zone or bust.

Oh, you look surprised. Shocked, even! Like you don’t already know. Mitchell, I’ve seen your squat form. You fold like a lawn chair at the faintest resistance. Do you want to face-plant with a barbell in public? No? Then Kidz Zone it is. That’s where they’ve got the foam versions of every piece of equipment and trainers who say “good job!” for doing anything remotely resembling a workout. You could jog in place for two seconds, Mitchell, and they’d hand you a sticker shaped like a star. A STICKER, Mitchell. Why wouldn’t you want that?

Oh, and before we’re done, I do have one very particular note about your gym etiquette that came to my attention this morning. Mitchell, do you understand that respect for your fellow gym-goers doesn’t end at wiping the seat down after you sweat? There is a sacred rule for how you address the front desk staff. If you’re rolling up here, acting all casual, calling me just “Mark,” like we went to kindergarten together and shared snack packs, know this—starting next time, it’s Mr. Mark to you. Yeah, that’s right—add some formality to your fitness life. Roll that title out like it’s leg day and you’re nervous about squatting 15 pounds. "Mr. Mark, sir. Thank you, Mr. Mark!" That’s the energy I deserve.

Why, you ask? Because I’m here for you, Mitchell. Every day, every check-in, every sweaty, exhausted, semi-delirious interaction with someone who just ran 6.5 miles with the wrong Spotify playlist. I’m unlocking locker combos you forgot, tracking down your water bottle after yoga, fielding calls about whether personal training packages are morally superior to protein powder shakes. And yet... yet, Mitchell, you couldn’t spare an ounce of decorum to slap a “Mr.” in front of “Mark”? Disrespectful. Heartbreaking, even.

But I get it, you’re busy. You’re juggling your bicep curls and your post-workout selfies — which, by the way, need lighting correction because they’re betraying your triceps — so sure, it’s easy to overlook. That’s why I’m extending you this one-time “proximity-pass” to redemption, effective starting tomorrow. Next time you strut up to this counter, I wanna hear it loud and proud. “Good day, Mr. Mark. Check me in, my good sir.” Maybe throw in a bow or a gym-equipment-related compliment. Really sell it.

For now, Mitchell, get yourself over to the Kidz Zone and stop loitering like you’ve got a Peloton livestream to fake smile through. And hey—next time you wanna make small talk, bring snacks. Preferably those fancy protein bars that taste like candy but won’t get me fired by Brenda, the gym supervisor who has feelings about the front desk image. It’s a wild ride here, Mitch, but someone’s gotta keep this gym circus running. Good luck out there. You’ll need it.

Oh, and don’t forget to wipe down the foam weights when you’re done with ‘em. Cheers, buddy.
