Instructions for Group Study

This study has 10 selected scriptures that depict resilience through the lens of biblical figures and teachings. Each scripture includes a group question to inspire reflection and discussion. Start by reading the scripture as a group, unpack the provided notes together, then allow time for each participant to share their personal insights and connections. Encourage honest, meaningful dialogue and take moments to pray over the revelations that arise.

Scriptures and Questions

1. Philippians 4:13 – "I can do all things through him who strengthens me."

Question: What does Paul’s statement reveal about relying on God’s strength rather than our own?
Notes: Paul wrote this declaration while imprisoned, showing deep trust in God despite suffering. Resilience here stems not from self-reliance but from divine sufficiency. This scripture challenges us to reflect on times when we're tempted to carry burdens alone, instead of leaning into the supernatural strength God provides.

2. Isaiah 40:31 – "But those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength..."

Question: What does it mean to 'wait for the Lord' when facing hardship?
Notes: The promise of renewed strength is tied to active waiting—it implies trust, hope, and patience in God's timing. This scripture paints resilience as a renewal process, where weariness is exchanged for fresh energy and resolve by depending on God.

3. 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 – "...we are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair..."

Question: How does this scripture provide hope in the face of overwhelming circumstances?
Notes: Paul details a resilience that defies natural logic—affliction, confusion, and persecution do not have the final word. It’s a testimony of power in fragility, as God ensures we are never abandoned or destroyed no matter how severe the trial.

4. Psalm 34:19 – "Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all."

Question: What kind of deliverance does God promise to the righteous?
Notes: This verse doesn’t promise avoidance of hardship but highlights God’s faithfulness in deliverance. Resilience involves trusting that no trial is beyond God's reach, emphasizing His ability to restore, even when suffering feels unrelenting.

5. James 1:2-4 – "Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds..."

Question: How does enduring trials produce spiritual maturity?
Notes: Resilience in this context is not immediate relief but growth over time. Trials refine faith, fostering perseverance that deepens trust in God. Group members can explore how joy amidst trials reflects a transformation only God can bring.

6. 1 Peter 5:10 – "...after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace... will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you."

Question: How does God’s restoration process strengthen our resilience?
Notes: This scripture highlights pain as temporary and God's grace as eternal. Resilience comes from the assurance that suffering is a precursor to restoration, where God personally establishes us on a firm foundation of His promises.

7. Romans 8:28 – "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him..."

Question: How can God’s sovereignty give us peace in the midst of setbacks?
Notes: Trusting that nothing is wasted in God’s plan fosters resilience. Even setbacks and failures serve a greater purpose under His orchestration. Discuss how holding this perspective shapes our ability to endure with hope.

8. Joshua 1:9 – "...Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."

Question: How does God’s presence strengthen us when we feel weak or afraid?
Notes: This command to Joshua underscores resilience rooted not in personal capability but in the assurance of God’s abiding presence. Fear and discouragement lose ground when we stand on the foundation of God's unchanging promises.

9. Hebrews 12:1-2 – "...run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus..."

Question: How does focusing on Jesus help us endure life’s challenges?
Notes: Fixing our eyes on Jesus transforms the race. He endured the cross as the ultimate example of resilience, paving the way for us. The scripture invites reflection on what distractions weigh us down and how to keep our focus on Him.

10. Proverbs 3:5-6 – "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding..."

Question: How does trusting in God bring clarity in times of uncertainty?
Notes: Resilience requires a surrender of our limited understanding to God’s infinite wisdom. Life's complexities are navigated better when trust replaces anxiety, highlighting God's ongoing guidance when we acknowledge Him in all our ways.

Closing Prayer

End your study by praying together, specifically asking God to cultivate resilience in each heart. Lift up any burdens or struggles shared during your discussions and thank Him for the strength and hope found in His Word.

Post-Bible Study Fellowship and Movie Night

After wrapping up our study, we will gather together to share a meal and enjoy fellowship. You are welcome to join us for either a potluck or takeout. If you’re participating in the potluck, feel free to bring a dish to share—options like casseroles, salads, finger foods, or desserts are always welcome! If takeout is more your speed, pizza, Chinese, or any favorite local cuisine can be brought in. Beverages and utensils will be provided.

Once we’ve settled in with our meals, we will begin our viewing of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, a poignant film set during World War II that explores themes of innocence, friendship, and the devastating impact of prejudice. This movie invites us to reflect deeply on humanity, choices, and compassion, offering profound life lessons.
