Mitchell’s Big Day at the Arcade

It all started with the promise of a fun-filled outing to the local arcade—a bustling haven of games, laughter, and flashing lights. You know the kind of place, where the sound of tokens dropping, electronic beeps, and the occasional triumphant cheer create a perfect storm of childhood excitement. For Mitchell, my energetic two-year-old, this was nothing short of a dream come true. Armed with undeniable toddler enthusiasm, he dashed from one game to the next, his tiny feet pattering across the bright, carpeted floors.

There was pure joy in watching him explore, whether he was attempting to shoot basketballs that were nearly bigger than him or excitedly feeding tokens into machines with no real understanding of the games they controlled. The arcade seemed limitless to him, a realm of adventure packed into a neon-lit wonderland. For me, it was part nostalgia, part challenge—a balancing act of keeping up with his energy while taking in the whimsical chaos of the day. Mitchell, of course, made it all worthwhile. From his look of intense concentration while navigating a racing game to his uncontrollable giggles when tickets spilled out of a machine, every moment was a snapshot of pure happiness.

However, as with any outing involving a toddler, the fun comes with an inevitable number of unpredictable moments. The day took a turn when Mitchell suddenly tugged on my hand, looked up at me with his big, innocent eyes, and loudly announced, “I need my diaper changed!” His timing couldn't have been more unfortunate, as he made his request right in the middle of a crowded corner of the arcade where several other kids and parents were gathered.

Now, Mitchell knows the rule about not asking for a diaper change so openly. It’s a lesson we’ve tried to instill for good reason—it’s a request that’s easily handled quietly and discreetly. But toddlers, as many daddies will agree, seem to have their own sense of timing and boundaries. I quietly reminded him that we’d wait a moment and handle it soon, hoping to avoid making a scene. Unfortunately, patience is not something Mitchell’s mastered yet, and his public announcements continued with increasing urgency. With his persistence starting to cause a bit of a commotion, it wasn’t long before the inevitable arrived—a quick timeout.

The timeout wasn’t met with protest but rather an exaggerated pout, arms crossed over his chest as he sat in the designated timeout spot. His expression seemed to say, “This is the worst thing to happen in the history of two-year-olds.” Still, the timeout provided just enough of a pause for both of us to recalibrate. After a heartfelt conversation about patience and timing (well, as heartfelt as you can get with a toddler), Mitchell was finally able to get the fresh diaper he requested. The entire process, while mildly chaotic in the moment, became just another memory that I couldn’t help but chuckle about later.

By the time we left the arcade, it was clear that the day had been memorable in more ways than one. Mitchell carried a shiny handful of tickets he’d earned—a badge of honor in his tiny world—and I carried the kind of story that only comes from the unpredictable and often hilarious adventures of parenthood.

How long do you think a little one like Mitchell should have to wait for a diaper change in the midst of all the delightful chaos of a day out?
