Interview: Balancing Fun and Nutrition: Lessons from Mitchell’s Snack Time

Shepherds Daycare first opened its doors just over a year ago, providing a safe and nurturing environment for children to learn and grow. Since its launch, there has been ongoing discussion about expanding the services by introducing Shepherds Home Daycare. However, despite the enthusiasm surrounding this idea, significant challenges related to logistics and planning have made progress difficult. Many of these obstacles have been beyond the control of Mitchell’s dedicated caregivers, leaving the vision for Shepherds Home Daycare as an exciting, yet unrealized, possibility.

Mitchell's caretaker recently called Mitchell’s big toy phone for an interview.

Caretaker: "Alright, little buddy, thanks for taking the time to chat with me today. First off, what’s your name, and how are you feeling about everything changing lately?"

Mitch: "Thanks for calling. My name is Mitchell, but you can call me Mitch. Things have been different, for sure, but in a good way. It’s like discovering a whole new world where everything feels a bit bigger and brighter."

Caretaker: "That’s a great way to look at it! What’s it been like for you? Has anything felt especially exciting or tricky so far?"

Mitch: "Well, it feels like I’m getting a whole new perspective. Everything feels really big and, honestly, kind of fun to figure out—like puzzles but in real life. Some things are still tough, like reaching high shelves or figuring out these big emotions, but I’m learning a lot. Oh, and snack time? That’s something I’ve really mastered."

Caretaker: "Snack time—you can’t go wrong with that! What’s your favorite snack these days?"

Mitch: "I’m a big fan of things I can hold in my hands, like crackers or fruit. It’s like managing an inventory—gotta keep snacks organized for maximum enjoyment!"

Caretaker: "You are definitely an efficient little guy! Do you have any advice for others who might find themselves in your shoes?"

Mitch: "Sure! First, try to look at everything as a chance to discover something new. If something’s hard, remember that trying again can turn it into something fun. And don’t forget—always keep your stuffed animals close. They make the best teammates."

Caretaker: "That’s some solid advice, Mitch! By the way, are you planning on enrolling in public school, joining any after-school programs, or maybe signing up for little league teams?"

Mitch: "Probably not. I’ve seen no signs of any enrollment possibility so far. The closest thing to that right now is probably going to be me getting babysitted by my brothers in Christ and caretakers. I mean, it’s not all bad though. They're great at keeping me entertained, and I get to learn a lot from them. Sometimes it feels like a personal little adventure that’s just for me. Who knows? Maybe something cool will come up in the future, but for now, I’m just rolling with what I’ve got."

Caretaker: "What about snack time? Have you been enjoying any fun junk foods? And how about your hourly milk bottles—have you been able to stick to drinking them?"

Mitch: "Snack time has been pretty fun! There’ve been some junk foods here and there, but also healthy options like sandwiches, so it’s been a nice balance. The milk, though… that’s been harder for me. I can usually only finish about a quarter of the bottle before I’m done. And honestly, I haven’t even been craving mac and cheese in my spare time, so it’s been a bit different than usual."

Shepherds Daycare has continually prioritized creating a well-rounded and supportive space for children to thrive. Hearing about Mitch’s snack habits and milk bottle struggles provides an authentic glimpse into the daily routines and challenges faced at the daycare. These small, personal details reflect the careful balance Shepherds Daycare maintains between fostering good habits and allowing flexibility for individual preferences. While Shepherds Home Daycare remains a dream for the future, the dedication of the team and the thoughtful care demonstrated every day ensure that Shepherds Daycare remains a cherished place for children and families alike.

Journal Prompt

Complete the journal prompt below after reading Mitchell's interview. Be sure to follow the given word count instructions to fully capture your thoughts and reflections on the themes discussed.

Introduction (100 words)

Mitchell's approach to snack time at Shepherds Daycare has sparked a lot of interesting thoughts. His method involves balancing healthy choices with occasional treats to create a positive, enjoyable environment for children. This balance addresses both nutritional needs and the comfort of indulging in personal preferences from time to time. Reflecting on this opens up an opportunity to think deeper. What do you personally think about Mitchell’s questions and answers regarding snack time? Do you feel his method strikes the right balance, or would you handle snack time differently? Explore these questions and consider your own perspective.

Exploration (250 words)

The idea of snack time might seem simple, but it can be quite meaningful. For instance, Mitchell considers health and happiness equally important when deciding on snack time routines. This might make others question their own stance toward such balance. Do you believe it’s more important to focus strictly on nutritional guidelines, or do you agree with adding small moments of enjoyment, like favorite treats? Snack time can often set a tone for the daycare environment—promoting sharing, patience, and even creativity among kids as they discuss or trade snacks. Reflecting on this, imagine what snack time at Shepherds Daycare might look like to you if you had the chance to decide.

Would your version of snack time focus on the same balance of fruits, veggies, and occasional cookies as Mitchell described? Or, alternatively, could it involve completely different options that you feel are more fun or beneficial? Write down what snack time might ideally include for you and explain your reasoning.

Reflection (150 words)

Lastly, think about what snack time teaches beyond just eating. Do you think Mitchell's approach might help teach kids about balance and choices in broader aspects beyond food? For example, could these lessons relate to maintaining good habits in school, at play, and at home? Reflect on your experiences and whether you'd appreciate this philosophy as a kid yourself.

Kid’s Essay Example
Snack time at my house is a bit different. I think Mitchell's way is nice because he tries to make it fun for everyone, but I would do it differently. If I could decide, we’d have snack time outside with sandwiches, apple slices, and juice boxes because being outside makes everything more exciting. I’d also include a "make your own" snack day so everyone can be creative. I think it’s important to have healthy snacks, but sweets like small brownies should be allowed, too, because they make people happy. Snack time is my favorite part of the day because it gives me energy and a chance to relax. I think Mitchell’s idea is good, but I’d always add a little twist to make it more exciting.

This journal prompt gives you the chance to reflect, imagine, and envision snack time that aligns with what feels right to you!
