TETHERED — STUDENT FILM

From the vivid imagination of Mitchell Royel, original author of KUMBAYA, comes TETHERED, a chilling short film that lures you into the unnervingly charming, neon-dipped streets of Venice, California. Set against the moody backdrop of Demi Lovato’s Here All Night—a soundtrack that haunts like a lullaby played on broken glass—this is not your average found-footage horror.

Maya Reyes (because, of course, it's Maya—she woos us with her chaotic charm right from her car vlog intro) begins what feels like a quirky, hustle-hard day in her dreamy but pretentious vegan French bakery job at Merci. That’s until JD Sloane shows up. JD is all smiles, almond croissants, and a vibe too smooth to be real. He’s the guy you swear you've seen on a billboard for overpriced whiskey or maybe in a fever dream. JD doesn’t blink. And the really terrifying part? Neither will you, because you're glued to the screen as Maya signs him up for her bakery's loyalty scheme, unknowingly binding herself to something far darker than late-night oat-milk complaints.

What begins as playful banter and Parisian pastries spirals into a story of possession, obsession, and inescapable debt (and we're not just talking about student loans here). Between glitches in security cam timestamps, inexplicably shattered ceramics, and JD’s eerie, unblinking watchfulness, Maya finds her vibrant influencer life crumbling into a supernatural nightmare. By the time JD utters the goosebump-inducing line, "I'll join anything you're running," Maya realizes the cost of "free" membership might just be her identity—or even her soul.

With a finale that blends grit, terror, and a shred of hope in Maya’s defiant fight for autonomy, TETHERED leaves you breathless. Are you safe in the comfort of your own home? Is your laugh really your own? And most of all... did you double-check before signing up for that savings program?

MOVIE POSTER
TITLE: TETHERED
TAGLINE: "Membership has its privileges."
DESIGN:

  • Foreground: JD Sloane (a sharp-suited, unnervingly calm man with reddish-orange swept-back hair and fair skin) steps into a chic French bakery. His black suit contrasts with the warm gold glow spilling from the bakery windows.

  • Background details: A chalkboard listing croissants with affirmations, blurred out softly, adding surreal warmth to the eerie undertone.

  • Subtle detail: JD’s reflection in the glass—a faint, shadowy distortion that hints at something… off.

VISUAL STYLE:

  • Soft, vintage color grading meets high-gloss new age aesthetics, with a flickering neon sign reading "Bienvenue" just behind JD.

  • A small but noticeable cracked security cam (upper corner) seems trained on JD—not the croissants.

FORMAT: 20-minute found-footage paranormal short.
(Warning: May cause you to question every time you’ve opted into loyalty rewards.)

TITLE CARD (white text on black):

The following footage was recovered from the phone, vlog camera, and home security devices of Maya Reyes. Additional footage was provided by Boulangerie Merci, Venice, California. It has been edited for length.

SUPER: TETHERED

INT. MAYA'S CAR – ROSE AVENUE, VENICE – MORNING

Handheld phone footage. Vertical, then rotated. Sunlight bounces off the windshield. A Venice morning: skateboards, palm trees, a man walking a parrot on a leash.

MAYA REYES (26), bright, quick, a little over-caffeinated, films herself in the driver's seat. Gold hoops. Hair in a claw clip. Bakery apron folded on the passenger seat.

MAYA
(to camera)
Good morning, my little sourdough starters. Today's video is "How to Run a Brand on Forty Dollars a Month." Rule number one: you don't need a studio. You need a window, a white wall, and the audacity.

She holds up a tiny ring light.

MAYA (CONT'D)
Thirty bucks. Clamps onto anything. I've lit a full skincare tutorial with this thing in a Whole Foods parking lot.

She checks the time and gasps.

MAYA (CONT'D)
Okay, I have a shift. Come to work with me. Do not tell Brigitte you're here.

INT. BOULANGERIE MERCI – MORNING

Phone footage from Maya's apron pocket. The lens peeks over the fabric edge, so the frame tilts and bobs.

A sunlit vegan French bakery. Hanging plants. Reclaimed wood counters. A chalkboard menu where every item is an affirmation:

ON CHALKBOARD:
JE SUIS ABUNDANT – Almond Croissant
JE SUIS RADIANT – Turmeric Brioche
JE SUIS ENOUGH – Plain Baguette

Behind the counter, three coworkers move with a choreography that suggests they've done this a thousand times and resent at least four hundred of them.

CAMILLE (28), Parisian, effortlessly bored, pipes cashew cream onto tarts.

INGRID (25), Swedish, tall, serene, arranges pastries as if each one has feelings.

GRETA (27), German, sharp, efficient, reads the ticket printer like a stock ticker.

BRIGITTE (40s), the French owner, claps her hands from the espresso machine.

BRIGITTE
Mes chéries. Announcement. Whoever signs up the most guests for the Abundance Circle this month wins a two-hundred-dollar bonus.

GRETA
Cash?

BRIGITTE
Cash. Also a free oat-milk cortado every day. For life.

CAMILLE
(not looking up)
For life is a long time to drink oat milk.

INGRID
I would like it to be known I am entering spiritually but not competitively.

Maya ties her apron, wide-eyed.

MAYA
Two hundred dollars is a new mic, a backdrop, and a week of not eating rice for dinner. I'm going to win this like it's the Hunger Games.

CAMILLE
In the Hunger Games, people die.

MAYA
Then I'll be very motivated.

INT. BOULANGERIE MERCI – LATER

Apron-cam. The lunch line snakes out the door. Yoga mats. Designer dogs. A man in a linen suit holding a crystal.

Maya works the register at full speed.

MAYA
Have you heard about the Abundance Circle? Every tenth pastry is free and you get a birthday affirmation.

CUSTOMER (O.S.)
What's a birthday affirmation?

MAYA
Ingrid calls you and tells you you're doing great.

INGRID (O.S.)
I mean it every time.

The camera bobs. In the background, near the back of the line, one figure stands perfectly still while everyone else shuffles and scrolls.

JD SLOANE (late 20s). Vibrant reddish-orange hair swept back from a fair, calm face. Brown eyes. Plain black crew-neck tee. He doesn't check his phone. He doesn't read the menu.

He looks straight at Maya's apron pocket. Straight at the lens.

The line moves. He moves with it, smooth and unhurried.

He reaches the counter.

MAYA
Hi! Welcome to Merci. What can I get started for you?

JD
Whatever you'd recommend.

MAYA
Bold. Okay. The Je Suis Abundant. It's an almond croissant that went to therapy.

JD smiles. Warm. Easy.

JD
Perfect.

MAYA
And can I tell you about our Abundance Circle? It's free, it's a savings club, you'd basically be paying yourself in croissants.

JD
Sure. I'll join anything you're running.

Maya spins the tablet around. He types slowly: name, phone number, email, birthday.

MAYA
(reading)
JD Sloane. What's JD stand for?

JD
Just JD.

MAYA
Very mysterious. Very "man in a perfume ad." Sign here.

He signs the screen with one long, looping stroke. It takes a beat too long. The line behind him doesn't seem to mind. Nobody behind him seems to notice anything at all.

He takes his croissant. Turns to go. Stops.

JD
Can I take you to dinner?

Maya blinks. Laughs, caught off guard.

MAYA
Wow. Okay. You signed up for a savings plan and asked me out in the same transaction. That's very efficient.

JD
I don't like to waste a trip.

Beat.

MAYA
Yeah. Okay. Yes.

He nods once and walks out. The bell over the door doesn't ring.

Behind the counter, Camille leans toward Greta.

CAMILLE
(low)
Did you hear the bell?

GRETA
No.

CAMILLE
Hm.

She goes back to her tarts.

INT. MAYA'S APARTMENT – NIGHT

Laptop webcam footage. Maya sits cross-legged on her bed, scrubbing through the day's apron-cam clips. Ingrid sits beside her, eating vegan gummy bears one at a time, like a ritual.

MAYA
I signed up forty-one people today. Forty-one. Brigitte cried a little.

INGRID
She cries at every sunset. It's not a high bar.

Maya pauses on JD's clip. Rewinds. Plays again.

INGRID (CONT'D)
He didn't look at the menu.

MAYA
Maybe he already knew what he wanted.

INGRID
(leaning closer)
He also didn't blink.

MAYA
Everyone blinks.

They watch. JD at the counter. Talking. Smiling. Signing.

He doesn't blink. Not once in two full minutes.

MAYA (CONT'D)
It's a compression thing. The phone drops frames.

INGRID
The phone dropped every frame where his eyes closed?

MAYA
It's a very selective phone.

Ingrid offers her a gummy bear. Maya takes it without looking away from the screen.

EXT. ITALIAN RESTAURANT PATIO – ABBOT KINNEY – NIGHT

Vlog camera on a mini tripod, tabletop. Café lights strung overhead. Cheap Chianti. A candle in a wax-crusted bottle between them.

Maya adjusts the camera.

MAYA
You're sure this is okay? I'm doing a series called "Dating as a Creator." It's mostly me getting dumped by guys who hate ring lights.

JD
Film whatever you want.

He sits perfectly still, hands folded, eyes on her. Maya relaxes into it.

JD (CONT'D)
So tell me how it works. The brand.

MAYA
You really want to know?

JD
I asked.

She lights up. Gestures with breadsticks like a general with battle maps.

MAYA
Okay. So, Sundays are batch days. I film twelve videos in one afternoon, three outfits, four looks, done. My wardrobe is thrifted. I have one eight-dollar blazer that has appeared in my content as a power look, a date look, a funeral look, and once, a cape.

JD
A cape.

MAYA
Halloween. It was a vampire tutorial. It did numbers.

He laughs. It sounds genuine.

MAYA (CONT'D)
I edit on free apps. I write brand pitches on my break between table four's oat-milk complaint and table seven's gluten interrogation. My whole studio is a window and a white sheet I stapled to my closet door.

JD
So you're a media company.

MAYA
I'm a media company that also steams almond milk. Which, honestly, is more than most media companies can say.

JD leans back. Studies her.

JD
When this takes off, I'm taking you to France.

MAYA
Oh, are you?

JD
Paris. You'll need content. I'll carry the ring light.

Maya bursts out laughing. JD laughs too. It's warm, easy, wonderful. The footage glows.

MAYA
You'd hold the ring light at the Eiffel Tower?

JD
I'd hold it at the Louvre. I'd hold it at a bakery that makes real butter croissants while you whisper an apology to Brigitte.

MAYA
She would sense it. She'd feel a disturbance across the ocean.

They laugh harder. Maya wipes her eyes.

CLOSE ON the candle between them.

The flame doesn't flicker in the breeze. It leans steadily toward JD, like it's being pulled.

Neither of them looks at it.

MONTAGE – "ON AND OFF" – VARIOUS

A series of clips: phone footage, security cam, vlog snippets. Each one stamped with a date.

A) INT. BOULANGERIE MERCI – SECURITY CAM – TUESDAY, 12:15 P.M.

JD in line. Same spot. Same black tee. Perfectly still while the line jostles around him.

B) INT. BOULANGERIE MERCI – APRON-CAM – THURSDAY, 12:15 P.M.

JD at the counter.

JD
How's the media company?

MAYA
Booming. I got a free sample of hemp shampoo. I'm basically a mogul.

He smiles. Takes his croissant. Leaves. The bell does not ring.

C) INT. MAYA'S APARTMENT – PHONE SCREEN RECORDING – NIGHT

A text thread. JD sends a photo of the Eiffel Tower.

ON SCREEN (TEXT):
JD: Scouting locations.
MAYA: lmaooo you're unwell
JD: I'm prepared.

D) INT. BOULANGERIE MERCI – BACK KITCHEN – DAY

Greta scrolls on the bakery tablet.

GRETA
JD Sloane has more Abundance points than anyone in the system. More than Brigitte's mother. And she lives here.

BRIGITTE (O.S.)
She is very abundant!

E) INT. BOULANGERIE MERCI – SECURITY CAM – TUESDAY, 12:15 P.M.

JD in line. Same spot. Same stillness.

In the bottom corner of the frame, the security cam's timestamp glitches, jumping from 12:15 to 12:15 to 12:15 for the entire forty seconds he stands there.

END MONTAGE.

INT. MAYA'S APARTMENT – NIGHT

Vlog cam. Maya sits on the floor surrounded by cardboard boxes. She holds her phone up to the lens, shaking.

MAYA
I got it. I got the deal. A year-long paid sponsorship with a skincare brand. Real money. Health-insurance money. I'm quitting the bakery.

She screams into a pillow. Comes up glowing.

MAYA (CONT'D)
I'm going to miss them. I'm not going to miss steaming oat milk for a man who calls me "barista energy." But I'll miss them.

INT. BOULANGERIE MERCI – DAY

Apron-cam, then handheld. Maya's last shift.

Brigitte hugs her tight, crying. Camille presents a tiny vegan tart with a single candle.

CAMILLE
It's not a cake. It's a farewell tart. It's very French. It means "we'll pretend we're not sad."

Greta hands her a laminated card.

GRETA
Lifetie Abundance Circle membership. I made it official. Don't lose it.

Ingrid wraps her in a long, serene hug.

INGRID
I'm starting an online book group. Spiritual. We read romance novels and set intentions. You should come.

MAYA
You read romance novels spiritually?

INGRID
Is there another way?

Maya laughs. Turns the phone toward the door.

MAYA
(to camera)
It's Thursday. He usually comes in on Thursday.

The door. The line. Ordinary faces.

No JD.

INT. MAYA'S APARTMENT – NIGHT

Phone screen recording.

ON SCREEN (TEXT):
MAYA: I quit!! Big news. Talk soon?

The message shows: Delivered.

Then: Read 9:14 PM.

No typing bubble. Nothing.

Maya stares at the screen for a long beat. Then she shrugs, a little hurt, and locks her phone.

AYA
(quietly)
Okay. Cool. Love that for me.

INT. MAYA'S NEW HOUSE – VENICE CANALS – DAY

Vlog cam. A small, bright bungalow near the canals. Maya gives a house tour to her followers.

MAYA
Welcome to the house that sponsorship built. It's tiny. It has one working outlet in the kitchen. I love it more than my own family.

She walks into her bedroom.

MAYA (CONT'D)
And this is the sacred corner.

On the nightstand: a small ceramic Buddha statue. Beside it on the shelf: a worn leather family Bible with a faded ribbon bookmark.

MAYA (CONT'D)
The Buddha was my grandma's. The Bible was my great-grandma's. Different religions, same energy: "eat something, you look thin." They keep me grounded.

She touches each one gently, like saying hello.

INT. MAYA'S NEW HOUSE – BEDROOM – NIGHT

Laptop webcam. Maya sits in bed with a mug of tea. A video call fills the screen: a grid of glowing tiles.

ON SCREEN: THE SACRED SWOON – ONLINE BOOK CIRCLE

Ingrid hosts from a candlelit room. Camille appears from her apartment, wrapped in a blanket, clearly here under protest. Greta reads from a highlighter-covered paperback. Several other members, all women, all holding the same book.

The book: "THE DUKE WHO WOULDN'T LET GO."

INGRID
Welcome, everyone. Light your candle. Set your intention. Tonight we read Chapter Twelve, where the duke confesses his love at the edge of the cliff.

CAMILLE
He's been confessing since Chapter Three. He has no other hobbies.

INGRID
Camille. Intentions.

CAMILLE
(sighing)
My intention is that the duke finds a hobby.

Maya laughs, holding her own copy.

MAYA
My intention is to finish one book this year that isn't a brand contract.

INGRID
Beautiful. Maya, would you read the first passage?

Maya opens the book. Clears her throat dramatically.

MAYA
(reading)
"'You may cross oceans,' the duke whispered, 'you may change your name, you may bar every door. But you gave me your hand freely, and what is given freely cannot be taken back.'"

She lowers the book.

MAYA (CONT'D)
Okay, that's a little much, Duke.

GRETA
He's a toxic man in a cravat.

Everyone laughs.

ON SCREEN: A new tile joins the call. Black. No video. No audio indicator.

The name under the tile reads: "JD."

Maya's smile drops.

MAYA
Ingrid, who invited—

INGRID
Invited who?

Maya looks again.

The tile is gone. Twelve tiles. Same as before.

MAYA
Nothing. I'm tired. The duke got to me.

INGRID
That's the power of literature.

INT. MAYA'S NEW HOUSE – BEDROOM – NIGHT – LATER

SUPER: DAY 60 SINCE MAYA QUIT. 11:47 P.M.

Laptop webcam. The call has ended. Maya sits alone. Candle burning. The book face down on her blanket.

MAYA
(to webcam)
Quick vlog. Book club was cute. Camille hates the duke. The duke deserves it. Goodnight, my little—

Every light in the house dies at once.

Not a flicker. Total, instant blackout. The laptop screen is now the only glow, lighting Maya's face from below.

The candle on the nightstand goes out by itself. A thin line of smoke curls straight sideways, toward the bedroom door.

MAYA (CONT'D)
Okay. House. Very dramatic.

She turns on her phone flashlight. Walks into the hallway. The vlog cam follows, handheld, shaky.

INT. MAYA'S NEW HOUSE – HALLWAY / KITCHEN – CONTINUOUS

Flashlight beam on the breaker box. She opens it. Every switch sits in the "on" position.

MAYA
Nothing tripped.

She moves to the kitchen window. Across the canal, every neighbor's porch light still burns. Warm. Normal.

MAYA (CONT'D)
(whispering)
It's just me.

She turns from the window.

JUMP CUT:

Same frame. Same kitchen. Maya stands in exactly the same spot, facing the same direction.

The light on the microwave clock blinks on: 3:33 A.M.

The house lights snap back on. All of them, at once.

Maya gasps, as if surfacing from water. She looks at her phone. Then at the camera.

MAYA (CONT'D)
It was 11:47. It was just 11:47.

She scrubs through her phone. The recording runs unbroken: three hours, forty-six minutes.

She doesn't remember any of it.

INT. MAYA'S NEW HOUSE – BEDROOM – DAY

Vlog cam on a tripod. Maya, exhausted, sets up a second camera in the corner of the bedroom: a night-vision security cam. She angles it at the bed, the nightstand, and the open doorway to the dark hall.

MAYA
(to camera, flat)
New series. "Am I Losing My Mind or Is My House Haunted?" Spoiler, I don't know.

She stares at the doorway for a beat.

MAYA (CONT'D)
If you're watching this and you're a ghost, please know I just signed a lease.

INT. MAYA'S NEW HOUSE – BEDROOM – NIGHT VISION

SUPER: NIGHT 61. 3:02 A.M.

Static wide shot. Green-gray night vision. Maya asleep. The doorway a black rectangle.

Silence. Room tone. A distant canal duck.

In the hallway, the light switch clicks. Down. Up. Down.

Maya doesn't stir.

SUPER: NIGHT 63. 3:14 A.M.

Same shot. Maya sits up in bed. Slow. Smooth. Her eyes are open but empty.

She turns her head toward the camera. Slowly.

She holds perfectly still.

She doesn't blink.

The footage counter ticks forward: 3:14... 3:21... 3:28... 3:33.

At 3:33, she lies back down as if nothing happened.

INT. MAYA'S NEW HOUSE – KITCHEN – MORNING

Vlog cam. Maya stands at the counter, pale, watching the night-vision footage on her laptop. She watches herself stare into the lens for nineteen minutes.

She closes the laptop. Turns away. Throws up into the sink.

Her phone buzzes. A text. She reads it, then shows the camera.

ON SCREEN (TEXT):
INGRID: Sacred Swoon tonight? Chapter 13. The duke builds her a castle. Camille is furious.

Maya stares at it. Types back:

ON SCREEN (TEXT):
MAYA: can't. not sleeping. house is being weird.

ON SCREEN (TEXT):
INGRID: Weird how?

Maya hesitates. Types:

ON SCREEN (TEXT):
MAYA: like someone's staying over who I didn't invite.

Typing bubble. It disappears. Reappears. Disappears.

ON SCREEN (TEXT):
INGRID: Light a candle. Keep your grandmother's things close. And Maya, don't say his name out loud.

MAYA
(to camera)
I didn't say anybody's name.

INT. MAYA'S NEW HOUSE – BEDROOM – NIGHT VISION

SUPER: NIGHT 66. 3:21 A.M.

Static shot. The bed is empty.

Maya stands at the foot of the bed, back to camera, facing the dark doorway. Barefoot. Arms loose at her sides.

A long silence.

She speaks. The voice is soft, even, warm. Not hers.

MAYA (JD'S VOICE)
You never finished signing up.

She turns around. Slowly. Faces the camera.

She smiles. A calm, patient smile.

It's JD's smile.

MAYA (JD'S VOICE) (CONT'D)
I'll join anything you're running.

The night-vision image fractures into static for two seconds.

When it clears, Maya is back in bed, asleep, covers pulled up to her chin.

INT. MAYA'S NEW HOUSE – BEDROOM – DAY

Handheld phone footage. Maya, frantic, digs through a drawer. She pulls out the laminated card Greta gave her.

INSERT – THE CARD:
ABUNDANCE CIRCLE – LIFETIME MEMBER.

Maya flips it over. She stops cold.

On the back, in looping handwriting she's never seen before:

"What is given freely cannot be taken back."

Maya drops the card like it bit her.

MAYA
(to camera, shaking)
That's from the book. That's from the duke book. Greta didn't write that. Greta writes like a tax form.

She grabs the paperback from her nightstand. Flips to the passage. Reads it again.

She looks up at the lens. Something clicks behind her eyes.

MAYA (CONT'D)
I gave him my number. I laughed at his jokes. I said yes to dinner. I typed his name into a system with my own hands.

She sits down hard on the bed.

MAYA (CONT'D)
I signed him up. He signed me up.

Beat.

MAYA (CONT'D)
Okay. Okay. Then I cancel.

INT. MAYA'S NEW HOUSE – BEDROOM – NIGHT VISION

SUPER: NIGHT 70. 3:00 A.M.

Static shot. Maya sleeps. On the nightstand, the Buddha sits beside the Bible, both bathed in green light.

The hallway is pitch black.

The power dies. The faint hum of the refrigerator stops. The night-vision cam switches to its battery backup with a soft click.

Silence.

Maya's eyes snap open.

She tries to sit up. She can't. Her arms slam flat against the mattress, pinned, as if by invisible hands. Her back arches.

MAYA
(strangled)
No. No, no, no—

Her mouth keeps moving. Two voices come out at once. Hers, cracking and furious. His, calm and kind.

MAYA / JD'S VOICE
(overlapping)
Get out of me— / Relax. You're going to love France.

The camera holds. One unbroken shot.

MIND

Maya clenches her jaw. Forces out words. Her own words.

MAYA
My name is Maya Reyes.

Her jaw twitches. The grip falters.

MAYA (CONT'D)
My mother's name is Rosa Reyes. My grandmother's name was Lucia.

Her head turns, fighting against something.

MAYA (CONT'D)
I have forty-one thousand, two hundred and six followers.

Beat.

MAYA (CONT'D)
Two hundred and seven, I got one this morning.

Her breathing steadies. Her voice gets louder. Only hers.

MAYA (CONT'D)
I built my brand on thirty-dollar lights and an eight-dollar blazer. I built it. Me. You held nothing.

BODY

She wrenches her right hand off the mattress. Her fingers bend backward at an impossible angle. She screams but keeps pulling.

Her left hand tears free.

She rolls hard to the side and crashes off the bed onto the floor. The camera shakes from the impact.

JD'S VOICE (V.O.)
(from nowhere, everywhere)
You gave it to me, Maya. Freely.

MAYA
(through gritted teeth)
Cancel. My. Membership.

SOUL

She claws across the floor toward the nightstand. Toward the Buddha. Toward the Bible.

Her fingertips stretch. Inches away.

The room fills with a low, rising hum, like a refrigerator the size of a cathedral.

Her fingers brush the edge of the nightstand.

Both objects explode.

The Buddha bursts into a cloud of ceramic shrapnel. The Bible erupts in a storm of shredded pages that hang suspended in the air for one full, impossible second.

Then they fall like snow.

The night-vision lens cracks clean across the middle. A howl tears through the room, deep and wordless, from no direction at all.

Maya screams. Her voice. Only hers.

The grip breaks.

She scrambles to her feet, pages sticking to her arms, ceramic dust in her hair.

INT. MAYA'S NEW HOUSE – HALLWAY – CONTINUOUS

Handheld phone footage. Maya grabs her phone off the hallway table and runs, filming as she goes. The flashlight beam whips across walls, doors, the black kitchen.

She hits the front door. Fumbles the lock. It sticks.

MAYA
Come on, come on, come on—

It gives.

EXT. MAYA'S NEW HOUSE – FRONT LAWN – VENICE CANALS – CONTINUOUS

Maya bursts out into the cold night air. Barefoot. Panting. Sobbing. Alive.

She stumbles onto the lawn. The phone camera swings wildly, then steadies.

The streetlights hum. The canal water is black and flat. Every house on the street is dark and silent.

Across the street, a dark sedan sits at the curb, engine idling. Headlights off.

Maya's phone camera pushes in. Shaking. Zooming.

Behind the windshield, lit faintly by the dashboard glow: reddish-orange hair swept back. Fair skin. Brown eyes. Black crew-neck tee.

JD SLOANE.

Perfectly still. Perfectly calm. Staring at her.

He doesn't blink.

He doesn't smile.

MAYA
(barely a whisper)
I quit.

Beat.

JD reaches down. Shifts the car into drive.

He pulls away from the curb. No rush. No screeching tires. Just two red taillights gliding down the dark street, shrinking smaller, smaller, until the night swallows them whole.

Maya lowers the phone.

Behind her, every light in her house switches back on at once.

She doesn't turn around.

INT. MAYA'S NEW HOUSE – BEDROOM – DAY

Phone footage. Daylight. The bedroom is a wreck: ceramic shards, torn Bible pages scattered across the floor and bed like confetti after a very bad party.

Maya kneels and picks up one torn page. She reads the single verse still intact. Her lips move silently.

She folds the page and tucks it into her pocket.

Then she picks up a small ceramic fragment: the Buddha's smiling face, still whole. She holds it to the lens.

MAYA
(hoarse)
Still smiling. Grandma would say that's the whole point.

She sets the camera down. Walks out of frame.

The footage runs on an empty room for five seconds. Then cuts.

TITLE CARD (white text on black):

Maya Reyes relocated three weeks after these events.

She has not posted since.

INT. BOULANGERIE MERCI – SECURITY CAM – DAY

SUPER: THE FOLLOWING TUESDAY. 12:15 P.M.

Wide security angle. The bakery hums with lunch traffic. Brigitte works the espresso machine. Camille pipes cashew cream. Greta reads the ticket printer.

Ingrid stands at the register. She glances toward the door, then looks away fast, the way you'd avoid a wasp.

A NEW HIRE stands beside her: ELODIE (22), French, bright-eyed, sweet, wearing a crisp new apron. Ingrid trains her on the tablet.

Near the back of the line, one figure stands perfectly still while everyone else shuffles and scrolls.

Reddish-orange hair. Black crew-neck tee.

Ingrid sees him. Her hand freezes over the tablet.

INGRID
(quietly, to Elodie)
Let me take this one.

ELODIE
No, no. I've got it. I'm going for the bonus.

Ingrid opens her mouth. Closes it.

The line moves. JD reaches the counter. He smiles at Elodie.

ELODIE (CONT'D)
Hi! Welcome to Merci. Have you heard about our Abundance Circle?

JD
(warm, easy)
Sure.

Beat.

JD (CONT'D)
I'll join anything you're running.

He looks up.

Straight into the security camera.

He doesn't blink.

The timestamp freezes at 12:15.

SMASH CUT TO BLACK.

TITLE CARD: TETHERED

FINAL CARD: Membership has its privileges.

FADE OUT.
