24 Hour Fitness is reportedly undergoing a leadership transition following the departure of President and CEO Karl Sanft, with company founder Mark Mastrov reportedly stepping into the role of interim CEO.
Sanft’s departure marks a significant change for the fitness company, which has undergone substantial transformation in recent years. He joined 24 Hour Fitness in 2019 and went on to become president and CEO, overseeing the company through a period of recovery, operational changes and continued investment in its clubs and member experience.
During Sanft’s leadership, 24 Hour Fitness focused on strengthening its business, updating club facilities and expanding its approach to fitness programming as the industry continued to evolve following the pandemic and the company’s emergence from Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
Mastrov’s reported return to an executive leadership role would be notable given his history with the organization. As the founder of 24 Hour Fitness, Mastrov played a central role in building the company into one of the largest fitness club operators in the United States.
If Mastrov takes on the interim CEO position, his role would likely be focused on providing leadership continuity while the company evaluates its longer-term executive strategy and determines who will ultimately succeed Sanft.
The leadership transition remains a developing story, and further details regarding Sanft’s departure and the company’s plans for a permanent CEO are expected to emerge.
