Mitchell's Day with Ryan: After the Mess
The morning had started with another diaper incident. Ryan, patient as always, handled the situation with practiced care. After cleaning Mitchell up, he carefully removed the soiled shorts, leaving Mitchell in just his diaper and t-shirt.
“Let’s go outside,” Ryan suggested, sensing Mitchell needed a change of scenery after the uncomfortable moment.
The playground was bathed in soft morning sunlight. A large, colorful ball sat near the fence - one of the daycare’s favorite play items. Ryan picked up the oversized ball, its bright colors catching Mitchell’s eye.
“Wanna play?” Ryan asked, rolling the ball towards Mitchell.
Mitchell’s earlier frustration melted away. The ball was almost as big as he was, but that only made the game more exciting. He pushed it back with all his might, giggling as the ball rolled slightly off course.
Ryan laughed, demonstrating how to kick the ball. Mitchell tried to mimic him, his little legs working hard to make contact. Sometimes he missed, sometimes he connected - but his joy was uncontained.
They played for what seemed like hours but was probably just twenty minutes. The big ball bounced between them, Mitchell’s earlier discomfort forgotten in the simple pleasure of play.
As they returned inside, Mitchell’s cheeks were flushed with excitement, a testament to the healing power of a kind caretaker and a simple game.
