Treehouse: Why These Boys Changed Their Minds About Meeting Superman After My Mascot Performance

He stood tall, striking a pose that mimicked the iconic Superman stance, his goofy mascot costume billowing slightly in the breeze. The backyard was alive with laughter and excitement, a group of wide-eyed kids watching him with rapt attention. “Fear not, citizens!” he declared, his voice booming with playful authority. “Superman is here to save the day!”

The boys erupted in giggles, their imaginations ignited. One of them shouted, “I really want to meet Superman! He’s the best!”

With a grin, he leaned in closer, ready to share a little wisdom. “You know, meeting Superman might sound amazing, but let’s think about it for a second. Imagine going grocery shopping with the actor who plays him. Picture this: you’re walking down the cereal aisle, and there he is, just a regular guy pushing a cart, picking out snacks and debating which brand of milk to buy. Kind of ho-hum, right?”

A boy frowned, clearly unconvinced. “But he’s still Superman! I’d love to meet him!” Another chimed in, “Yeah, it’d be cool to hang out with him!”

He nodded, acknowledging their enthusiasm. “I get it, but here’s the thing: actors have publicists, agents, and handlers who help maintain an image that’s often very different from the characters they play. When you see Superman on screen, he’s this incredible hero, but the actor has a whole team behind him, making sure he looks and acts a certain way in public. That’s not the same as being the hero you see in the movies.”

The kids exchanged glances, their expressions shifting as they processed his words. “In that moment, when you see the actor just being a regular person, it can take away some of the magic. You realize that they deal with everyday stuff just like us. They’re not always flying around or saving the day; they’re just trying to live their lives.”

As understanding dawned on their faces, he continued, “So, while meeting Superman might be cool, it’s the movies that let you escape into that incredible world. You get to experience all the action and excitement without the reality of who the actor really is. And that’s what keeps the superhero magic alive.”

With a wink, he struck another heroic pose, reminding them that while he may not be the real Superman, he was just as cool—if not cooler—in their backyard, bringing the superhero spirit to life.

-No better, no worse—just trying to make sense of it all.
