8:30PM OPTIONAL, CO-ED: ANCHORED IN THE WORD: NAVIGATING TRUTH IN A DIGITAL AGE, BIBLE STUDY, POTLUCK, FILM

Purpose and Theme

The goal of this study is to inspire meaningful reflection and discussion on the importance of grounding ourselves in God's truth, as revealed in the Bible, amidst the distractions and complexities of modern technology. By turning first to Scripture, we can remember where real wisdom and guidance originate and how it applies to our digital world.

Structure

Begin each session by reading the designated scripture passages aloud. Participants should bring their Bibles and take time to actively listen and reflect during the readings. Following the scripture, the group will engage in discussion guided by the provided 30 questions. Each question encourages participants to share at least a paragraph of notes, unpacking layers of biblical teaching and relating them to the impact of technology in their lives.

Scripture Selection (Read Aloud)

  1. Ecclesiastes 12:12-14 - "Beware of anything beyond these. Of making many books there is no end, and much study is a weariness of the flesh. The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man."

    • How does this speak to the overwhelming information technology offers?

  2. Isaiah 30:15 - "For thus said the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel, 'In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength.' But you were unwilling."

    • How does technology distract us from "quietness and trust" in God’s presence?

  3. Amos 8:11-12 - "'Behold, the days are coming,' declares the Lord GOD, 'when I will send a famine on the land—not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD. They shall wander from sea to sea, and from north to east; they shall run to and fro, to seek the word of the LORD, but they shall not find it.'"

    • How does this passage resonate with a culture where people are "always searching" but never finding true fulfillment in digital spaces?

  4. Habakkuk 2:20 - "But the LORD is in his holy temple; let all the earth keep silence before him."

    • Reflect on how technology can crowd out silence and stillness before God.

  5. 2 Chronicles 16:9a - "For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to those whose heart is blameless toward him."

    • How can this scripture encourage us when technology feels overwhelming?

  6. Job 28:12-13, 28 - "But where shall wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding? Man does not know its worth, and it is not found in the land of the living. … And he said to man, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.’"

  7. Romans 12:2 - "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect."

  8. Psalm 119:37 - "Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways."

  9. 1 Thessalonians 4:11 - "And to aspire to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we instructed you."

Discussion Questions

  1. What parallels do you see between Ecclesiastes 12’s warning on “making many books” and our digital culture of endless content?

  2. How does technology challenge the rest and quietness described in Isaiah 30?

  3. How can our reliance on technology mask the deeper spiritual hunger described in Amos 8?

  4. What practices can help us “keep silence before him,” as instructed in Habakkuk 2?

  5. Reflecting on 2 Chronicles 16, how does God’s constant vision compare to the constant exposure of digital surveillance?

  6. Where do you seek wisdom most often—online resources or the Bible? How do Job 28’s words guide you to prioritize God’s insight?

  7. How can Romans 12 sharpen discernment when consuming media?

  8. Psalm 119 says, “Turn my eyes from worthless things.” What digital habits might qualify as "worthless," and how can we redirect focus?

  9. Technology can suggest fulfillment through endless connectivity. How does 1 Thessalonians 4 challenge that notion?

  10. How does an over-reliance on algorithms obstruct the Holy Spirit’s guidance?

  11. Proverbs 3 asks us to trust the Lord with all our hearts. How does technology tempt us to lean more on our understanding in decision-making?

  12. What does being "transformed by the renewal of your mind" practically look like in modern tech reliance?

  13. Technology often glorifies speed and efficiency. How do biblical passages on patience and waiting reflect God’s values instead?

  14. How can group prayer help combat isolation encouraged by technology?

  15. Habakkuk describes stillness. Where in your schedule can you carve out intentional “temple moments”?

  16. How does gratitude to God challenge the attitude of digital envy often fueled by social media?

  17. What areas of digital life compete most with God’s authority?

  18. How does technology amplify gossip or slander, and how can the church foster truth in light of it?

  19. Can screen settings or limits serve as practical steps toward spiritual boundaries?

  20. Technology can feel inescapable. Where do Psalms encourage renewal in God’s word?

  21. What verses anchor you amid technological burnout?

  22. Where do children/youth in your life need help learning to seek truth?

  23. If you had 30 minutes offline, how would Scripture command that time?

  24. How might Sabbath rest reconnect us from digital fray to God's intention for holistic life?

  25. Reflecting on back-to-back scripture (Is. 30 & Ps. 37), how does tech "mimic" God falsely ?

After we conclude our study, we’ll transition into a relaxed evening of food and film. For our potluck, we encourage tech-savvy, health-conscious options to keep the atmosphere aligned with our day’s theme. Think modern recipes like air-fried vegetable chips, quinoa salads with an easy-to-share dressing on the side, protein-packed energy bites, or fruit platters with yogurt dip. Keep it simple and shareable, and if you need inspiration, feel free to search for “healthy potluck ideas” online—there are plenty of quick, crowd-pleasing recipes out there!

For the film portion of the evening, we’ll settle in for a rewatching of The Island by Michael Bay, a thought-provoking movie that perfectly complements our discussions. To complete the cinematic experience, we’ll make homemade popcorn! Bring along your favorite seasonings like nutritional yeast, cinnamon-sugar, or even chili powder and lime for added options. If you’d prefer classic buttered popcorn, that’s entirely welcomed too—variety is key here so everyone can enjoy a snack tailored to their taste.

After the movie, we’ll gather for group discussion. Here are ten questions to spark deeper reflection:

  1. How does The Island portray technology as both a savior and a deceiver?

  2. What parallels can you draw between the film’s depiction of “control” and the influence of technology in real life?

  3. Did any character resonate with your experience of navigating truth in the digital age? Why?

  4. What moments in the film challenged your understanding of human autonomy versus technological dependency?

  5. How might the promises of technology in the movie mirror promises we see in today’s tech world?

  6. What values or truths do you think were most distorted in the characters’ pursuit of “better lives”?

  7. How does this film challenge us to evaluate the role of ethics in innovation?

  8. Is there a specific scene that made you reflect on your faith in the context of technology’s rise?

  9. What safeguards can we personally apply to stay anchored in truth when surrounded by tempting tech promises?

  10. How does this story reaffirm the importance of Sabbath rest and holistic living in today’s connected world?

This will be a time not only to share perspectives but also to connect further as a group. We look forward to hearing your thoughts!
