Aiden’s Choice

Aiden, Mitchell’s 20-year-old camp counselor at Shepherd’s Daycare, noticed that Mitchell was feeling a bit restless after lunch. Mitchell, just two years old, was sitting quietly but shifting uncomfortably in his seat. Aiden could tell that Mitchell had a dirty diaper, but he also knew from experience that sometimes it was better to let the little ones get some fresh air and playtime before changing them, especially right before nap time.

“Hey Mitchell,” Aiden said with a warm smile, crouching down to the toddler’s level. “How about we go outside and have some fun on the playground before your nap?”

Mitchell’s eyes brightened at the suggestion, and he reached out his tiny arms for Aiden to pick him up. Gently lifting him, Aiden carried Mitchell out of the toddler room and toward the playground, where the afternoon sun bathed the area in a golden glow.

The playground was alive with the sounds of laughter and the excited chatter of other toddlers and counselors. Mitchell’s face lit up as he spotted the big slide, his favorite spot to play. Aiden carefully helped him climb the small steps, steadying him with a supportive hand. When they reached the top, Aiden slid down with Mitchell in his lap, eliciting a delighted giggle from the little boy.

They repeated the slide a few times, and Mitchell’s laughter grew louder with each run. The fresh air and the movement seemed to lift his spirits, and soon he was eager to explore other parts of the playground. Aiden watched closely, making sure Mitchell was safe as he toddled toward the sandbox and began to dig with his small hands.

Even though Mitchell still had his dirty diaper on, Aiden knew that the active play would help him feel more comfortable and relaxed. Sometimes, a bit of movement and distraction before a diaper change and nap could make all the difference in helping a toddler settle down.

After about twenty minutes of play, Aiden gently called Mitchell back. “Alright, buddy, time to head inside now so we can get you ready for your nap.”

Mitchell looked a little reluctant to leave the playground but trusted Aiden’s calm voice. Aiden carried him back to the toddler room, where the atmosphere was quieter and more peaceful.

Once inside, Aiden carefully helped Mitchell onto the changing table. The toddler was calm and cooperative, likely feeling tired after all the fun outside. Aiden worked quickly but gently, removing the soiled diaper and cleaning Mitchell thoroughly with wipes. He applied a soothing cream to prevent any irritation and secured a fresh diaper snugly in place.

“All done, buddy,” Aiden said softly, smiling down at Mitchell. “Now you’re all clean and comfy for your nap.”

He lifted Mitchell and carried him to his nap mat, settling him down with a soft blanket. Mitchell’s eyes grew heavy almost immediately, and within moments, he was peacefully asleep.

Aiden stood quietly for a moment, watching the little boy rest comfortably. He felt a deep sense of satisfaction knowing that his decision to let Mitchell enjoy some playtime before changing him had helped make the day better for the toddler. It was these small moments of care and attention that made his job as a camp counselor at Shepherd’s Daycare so rewarding.
