8:30PM CO-ED, OPTIONAL: ON AUTHORITY, BIBLE STUDY, POTLUCK, FILM

Instructions:

Welcome to this co-ed Bible study exploring the theme of authority in Scripture. Authority is a central topic of the Bible, reflecting God’s rule, divine order, and how followers of Christ are called to live under His authority while representing it in the world. This study will guide you through 750 words of Scripture passages on authority, prompting group reflection and discussion. For each thoughtful discussion question, participants should take a brief paragraph of notes that expands on their personal insights. These notes will allow further reflection outside of the group setting.

Scriptures on Authority (Approximately 750 Words):

  1. Genesis 1:26-28
"Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’"
Note: This opening Scripture highlights humanity’s delegated authority under God over creation and the responsibility tied to it.

  2. Exodus 20:1-3
"And God spoke all these words, saying, ‘I am the Lord your God... You shall have no other gods before me.’"

  3. Psalm 103:19
"The Lord has established His throne in the heavens, and His kingdom rules over all."

  4. Proverbs 16:9
"The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps."

  5. Matthew 28:18-20
"And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them... and teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.’"

  6. Mark 1:22
"And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes."

  7. Romans 13:1-2
"Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God."

  8. Philippians 2:9-11
"Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow..."

  9. Hebrews 13:17
"Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls..."

  10. Revelation 19:16
"On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords."

These passages provide a foundation for unpacking the layers of biblical authority — God’s ultimate rule, Christ’s authority, human response, and delegated responsibilities.
