Jungle Gym Special: Plan Early - Give Big
Captured by Mitchell Royel today, 8/18/26, in Baldwin Hills on iPhone: Christmas, the most wonderful time of the year,
Filled with joy, laughter, and festive cheer.
Start early, plan with heart, spread delight,
Bring magic to others by giving bright.

Of love and warmth in Christmastime.
FADE IN:
INT. BALDWIN HILLS HOME — TAVARIUS'S BEDROOM — LATE AFTERNOON
Hot August light pours through a wide window, pressing gold across the whole room. Outside, a quiet Baldwin Hills street rolls down the hillside — palm trees, tidy lawns, rooftops baking in the summer sun. A neighbor's sprinklers tick across the grass. Somewhere down the block, kids are on their bikes. It's August. Full-on summer. Christmas is the last thing on anybody's mind.
Anybody except these two.
Inside, the room is cozy and full of life. A bookcase stacked with paperbacks. A framed Bulls jersey up high, a basketball, a couple of gold trophies. Family photos on the wall. A plaid comforter on the bed, a patterned rug on the floor.
On the rug sits a notebook, some markers, and a shoebox with the lid off.
TAVARIUS, 11, sits cross-legged on the rug in a grey "CHAMPIONS" tee, chewing the cap of a marker, deep in thought over the notebook. Beside him, on a wooden desk chair, sits HAYDEN, 18, in a dark blue polo and khakis, one arm draped warmly over Tavarius's shoulder. Hayden's babysitting today — and he came prepared.
Hayden spots us. He grins.
HAYDEN
Oh — hey. Perfect timing.
He nudges Tavarius, who looks up and waves big.
HAYDEN (CONT'D)
I'm Hayden. This is Tavarius. And right now? We're on a mission.
Tavarius holds up the notebook so we can see the words "CHRISTMAS PLAN" scrawled across the top in blue marker.
HAYDEN (CONT'D)
Yeah, you heard that right. It's August. August in Baldwin Hills. Sun is blazing, school hasn't started back yet, and Tavarius's mom asked me to look after him today. Best babysitting shift ever — because we're using every minute of it.
He leans in a little, lowering his voice like it's a secret.
HAYDEN (CONT'D)
Here's what most people don't realize. Christmas sneaks up on you. One day it's summer, and the next day everybody's panicking at the mall, broke and stressed out. Not us. We're planning right now. In August. While we've got the time.
He spreads his arms wide.
HAYDEN (CONT'D)
Big house, small house, apartment. Doesn't matter. This is for all of you. Every kid watching, every background, every neighborhood. Christmas belongs to everybody — and the secret weapon is starting early.
Tavarius nods hard, like this is the most important thing anyone's ever said.
HAYDEN (CONT'D)
Four tips. Then we're gonna build something together. You ready? Let's go.
The camera pushes in slightly. Hayden is in full flow.
HAYDEN (CONT'D)
Tip one. Make your list. And I don't just mean what you want.
He holds up a finger.
HAYDEN (CONT'D)
Grab a notebook — just like Tavarius did. Write down the people you love. Mom, dad, grandma, your little brother, your best friend. Then next to each name, write one thing that would make them smile.
Tavarius taps his notebook proudly.
TAVARIUS
I put my mom likes those little candles.
HAYDEN
See? That's it. That's the whole game. It's not about how much you spend. It's about paying attention to people. And doing it in August? You've got months to make it happen. No rush. No panic.
He holds up a second finger.
HAYDEN (CONT'D)
Tip two. Decorate early. Well — not your house yet. But start making stuff now.
He gestures at the markers and paper spread across the rug.
HAYDEN (CONT'D)
Cut out snowflakes. Draw ornaments. Make cards. Create decorations ahead of time so when December hits, you're already ready. You don't need to wait for the feeling — you build toward it.
He picks up a marker, spins it once.
HAYDEN (CONT'D)
The earlier you start, the longer you get to enjoy it. Why scramble later when you can create right now?
Tavarius grabs a sheet of paper and starts folding.
HAYDEN (CONT'D)
Exactly. Look at this guy. Already on it.
He holds up a third finger, slower now.
HAYDEN (CONT'D)
Tip three. Budget. Yeah — I said budget.
Tavarius makes a face. Hayden laughs.
HAYDEN (CONT'D)
I know, I know. Sounds boring. But here's the truth. The best gifts don't cost much. A drawing. A letter. Cookies you bake yourself closer to the holidays. A jar full of nice notes about somebody. And if you start saving a little now — even a dollar a week — by December you've got something real to work with.
He leans forward.
HAYDEN (CONT'D)
Write down what you can spend, and stick to it. And if you've got zero dollars? You can still give the best gift of all. Your time. Your effort. Something you made with your own hands.
He holds up a fourth finger. His voice warms.
HAYDEN (CONT'D)
Tip four. And this one's my favorite. Give back.
He glances out the window at the neighborhood baking in the August heat.
HAYDEN (CONT'D)
Somewhere near you, there's a family, a kid, a neighbor who could use a little something come Christmas. Plan for them now. A can of food for a drive. A toy you don't play with anymore, cleaned up for a donation box. An hour helping out.
He looks right into the camera.
HAYDEN (CONT'D)
Christmas hits different when you give it away. Trust me. That feeling? You can't buy it. You can only earn it. And if you plan it in August, you actually have time to do it right.
Tavarius tugs Hayden's sleeve and points at the empty shoebox.
TAVARIUS
Can we do the project now?
HAYDEN
Oh, we're doing the project.
He claps his hands together, energized. The camera pulls back to show both of them on the rug.
HAYDEN (CONT'D)
Alright — here's your Christmas Project. And you can do this right now, today, during a babysitting shift in August, with whatever you've got in the house. We call it the Give-Back Box.
He grabs the shoebox and holds it up.
HAYDEN (CONT'D)
Step one. Find a shoebox. Any box. Doesn't have to be fancy.
Tavarius grabs the markers and a sheet of wrapping paper.
HAYDEN (CONT'D)
Step two. Decorate it. Wrap it, color it, cover it in stickers, draw all over it. Make it look like something special — because it is.
Tavarius starts coloring a big green tree on the side of the box, tongue poking out in concentration.
HAYDEN (CONT'D)
Step three. Fill it up. Small stuff. Socks. A toothbrush. Crayons. A little snack. A toy that's still good. A handwritten card that says "Merry Christmas, from someone who's thinking about you."
He drops a few items into the box one by one.
HAYDEN (CONT'D)
Step four. Give it away. Ask a grown-up to help you find a shelter, a toy drive, or a church collecting boxes. Then you hand it over — and you made somebody's whole holiday.
He looks at Tavarius, who's holding up the finished, colorful box with the biggest grin.
HAYDEN (CONT'D)
That's it. That's the project. One box. One kid. One difference. And the best part? You built it in August, on a regular afternoon — and come December, somebody's going to feel it.
He turns back to the camera, slower now. Warmer.
HAYDEN (CONT'D)
Here's what I want you to remember. Christmas isn't about the biggest tree or the most expensive gift. It's about planning ahead so you can be there for the people you love. It's about starting early — even when it's summer — so you actually enjoy it. And it's about giving, not just getting.
He glances around the warm room, then back to us.
HAYDEN (CONT'D)
So grab a notebook. Make your list. Find a shoebox. Start today. Wherever you are, whoever you are — this is your season too. Even in August.
Tavarius scoots closer, holding the Give-Back Box out toward the camera like an offering.
TAVARIUS
Merry Christmas!
HAYDEN
Merry Christmas. From Baldwin Hills — to wherever you're watching.
They both wave. Outside, the August sun is still high, the street shimmering with heat. But inside this room, it already feels a little like Christmas.
A title card bounces onto the screen in bold, hand-drawn letters — "PLAN EARLY - GIVE BIG" Snowflakes drift playfully around the words — totally out of season and completely on purpose. Upbeat, feel-good music kicks in.
FADE TO BLACK.
[GIVE-BACK BOX] CHRISTMAS PROJECT INSTRUCTIONS
FADE IN:
INT. BALDWIN HILLS HOME — TAVARIUS'S BEDROOM — LATE AFTERNOON
The room is calm and bright — August sun still warming everything through the window. The finished Give-Back Box sits on the rug between Tavarius and Hayden, covered in color. Markers are scattered everywhere. A gentle, feel-good tune hums underneath.
Hayden steps back into frame, holding the notebook. Tavarius sits beside him, grinning.
HAYDEN
Okay — let's break the whole thing down, nice and simple. Four short steps. You can knock this out right now, on a summer afternoon, before Tavarius's mom even gets home. Ready?
He holds up one finger.
HAYDEN (CONT'D)
STEP ONE: Grab your box. Shoebox, cereal box, any old box you've got lying around. Take the lid off and clear it out.
Tavarius taps the side of the box proudly.
HAYDEN (CONT'D)
STEP TWO: Decorate it. This is the fun part. Wrapping paper, markers, stickers, glitter if somebody's mom gives the green light — no promises there. Draw a tree, write "Merry Christmas," make it yours.
He raises a second finger.
HAYDEN (CONT'D)
STEP THREE: Fill it up. Think about what would make somebody's day. Socks. A toothbrush and toothpaste. Crayons or a coloring book. A snack. A small toy in good shape. And always — a little card with a kind message inside.
He holds up a third finger, pacing gently like a coach at halftime.
HAYDEN (CONT'D)
STEP FOUR: Give it away. This part you do with a grown-up. Look up a local shelter, a food bank, a toy drive, or a church collecting donations right here in the community. Then drop your box off together.
He kneels down next to Tavarius, resting a hand on the box.
HAYDEN (CONT'D)
Bonus round? Make more than one. Get your friends together. Get your class in on it when school starts back. Turn it into a whole crew mission. The more boxes, the more kids you reach — and you've got all summer and fall to pull it off.
He looks up at the camera, beaming.
HAYDEN (CONT'D)
And that's your project. Four steps, one box, a whole lot of heart. Because here's the secret — the best part of Christmas isn't opening gifts. It's knowing you gave one. And starting in August? That's the move nobody else is making.
Tavarius lifts the box up high, and Hayden taps it like a fist bump.
TAVARIUS
Let's make ten!
HAYDEN
Now we're talking.
The camera pulls back on the two of them — a babysitter and the kid he's looking after, sitting on a rug in Baldwin Hills on a regular August afternoon, doing something that's anything but regular.
HAYDEN (CONT'D)
Start now, wherever you are. Grab a box. Fill it up. Give it away. Plan early, give big — and make this Christmas count. For everyone.
He grabs a marker and draws one last star on top of the box. Tavarius laughs. Outside, the August sun hangs high and bright, the neighborhood alive with summer.
Christmas is still months away.
But not for these two.
FADE OUT.
