Jungle Gym: Great Dubai Mall Experiment

Note: This moment, captured on iPhone today (8/17/26), carries no endorsement or affiliation with any malls, either in Dubai or the United States.

INT. DUBAI MALL — DAY

A massive, gleaming shopping mall corridor stretches in every direction. The arched glass ceiling floods everything with natural light. Palm trees line the central promenade. International storefronts — GAP, H&M, and glittering Arabic-scripted boutiques — flank both sides. It looks like a fever dream designed by someone with unlimited money and zero restraint.

BASTIAN, 14, messy light brown hair, wearing a "DUBAI 10" soccer jersey, drops his backpack on the polished floor and slowly spins in a circle, mouth hanging open.

CRISPIN, 13, short dark brown hair, grey "Soccer Academy" shirt, green track pants, adjusts his backpack straps and stares upward.

LUCA, 14, curly brown hair, white soccer jersey with a red "7," holds a green-capped water bottle and slowly turns his head left, then right, then left again.

BASTIAN
(barely above a whisper)
Okay. Guys. Look up.

CRISPIN
(already looking up)
I'm looking up.

LUCA
(also already looking up)
We're all looking up, Bastian.

BASTIAN
That's not a ceiling. That's just... the sky. They bought the sky and put a mall under it.

CRISPIN
There are palm trees in here. Real palm trees. Growing. Inside. A building.

LUCA
Back in Ohio, our mall has a fountain with like forty-seven pennies in it and an escalator that's been broken since 2019.

BASTIAN
And a food court that smells like sadness and old pretzels.

LUCA
(defensively)
The pretzels are incredible and I will not hear otherwise.

They begin walking deeper into the corridor, gawking at everything. A family strolls past. Shoppers move in every direction. Two guys with backpacks head toward H&M.

CRISPIN
There's also an aquarium in here. With sharks.

BASTIAN
Sharks.

CRISPIN
Actual sharks. Next to a sneaker store. Someone looked at blueprints and said, "Yes. Sharks. Put them here."

LUCA
(raising his water bottle)
Honestly? Respect.

BASTIAN
(stopping in the middle of the corridor)
Okay. Okay, hear me out. I have a scientific question.

CRISPIN
(sighing)
It's not scientific.

BASTIAN
Back home, right — you goof around in the mall, you get kicked out. Every time. No exceptions.

LUCA
Every. Time.

BASTIAN
Remember the Cinnabon Incident?

LUCA
(proudly)
I stuck the landing.

CRISPIN
You took out a mannequin and a security guard chased us to the parking deck.

LUCA
(still proud)
Stuck. The. Landing.

BASTIAN
My point is — does it work the same here? This place is enormous. It has sharks and a river and its own weather system probably. Would anyone even notice three American kids fooling around?

Beat.

CRISPIN
This is a terrible idea.

LUCA
(already grinning)
Terrible ideas are literally all we do.

INT. DUBAI MALL — CONTINUOUS

BASTIAN climbs onto CRISPIN's back. CRISPIN, against every rational instinct he possesses, takes off running down the polished corridor.

CRISPIN
(running, wheezing)
Why am I doing this — why am I always doing this —

BASTIAN
(arms out like an airplane)
FOR SCIENCE!

LUCA
(sprinting after them)
FOR AMERICA!

CRISPIN dives onto a bench, pretending to be a goalkeeper. BASTIAN does a spin move like he's dodging a defender. LUCA winds up, takes a breath, and attempts the legendary Cinnabon Cartwheel 2.0 right in the middle of the walkway.

He does not stick the landing.

He crashes magnificently into a rack of hats outside a storefront. Caps explode into the air like colorful confetti. The three of them collapse into laughter, surrounded by hats, completely out of breath.

A long shadow falls over them.

A SECURITY GUARD stands above them — tall, arms folded, completely calm — wearing the universal expression shared by every mall security guard on planet Earth.

SECURITY GUARD
Boys.

BASTIAN
(tiny voice)
Hi.

SECURITY GUARD
Out.

Long pause.

CRISPIN
(pulling a cap off his head)
I told you.

EXT. DUBAI MALL — ENTRANCE — CONTINUOUS

The three boys stand outside in the warm Dubai sun. The enormous mall doors close silently and perfectly behind them. They squint in the light.

LUCA slowly raises his water bottle in the air like a trophy.

LUCA
Experiment... complete.

CRISPIN
Results?

BASTIAN
(brushing off his jersey)
The malls here are nicer. The floors are shinier. There are real palm trees and actual sharks and a river inside a building.

LUCA
But the rules...

ALL THREE
(together)
...are universal.

A beat. Then all three crack up at the same time.

CRISPIN
So. Aquarium?

BASTIAN
Obviously. But we behave this time.

CRISPIN and LUCA look at each other.

CRISPIN & LUCA
(completely unconvinced)
Sure.

They walk off into the Dubai sunshine. Nobody believes Bastian. Not even a little.

SMASH CUT TO CREDITS.
