Captured this moment in the heart of the Fashion District, thanks to the incredible eye of Mitchell Royel—what a vibe! Currently, we're spinning "Bullseye" by Aly & AJ on repeat, and honestly, the energy is just everything.
written by Mitchell Royel: Set against the colorful backdrop of the small-town Iron Prairie Fitness gym, this heartfelt and comedic story follows Max, a rule-abiding gym supervisor with a laminated approach to life, and Liv Shimmermore, a faded 2000s pop star navigating her way through the hilarity of nostalgia and rediscovery. When Liv strides into the gym seeking a "comeback" moment, her larger-than-life confidence turns the quirky staff—a lovable trio with schemes like "Wolf Mode" pre-workouts—into her fiercest allies. Meanwhile, Max attempts to manage the chaos and his growing affection for Liv.
Their bond is tested when a shadowy group, the Quiet Front, threatens Neon Night—Liv's chance to reclaim the stage and herself. Through slapstick detective work, awkward karaoke moments, and a climactic alley confrontation, the ragtag gym crew outwits danger without Liv knowing. Neon Night proves triumphant, Liv dazzles both the crowd and herself, and the team’s unlikely friendship reaches a joyous culmination.
Ultimately, this quirky rom-com celebrates second chances and self-belief, concluding with a tender wedding, a community gathered in glitter-dusted unity, and Max finally breaking his own rules to stand with Liv—his favorite "dashboard diva."
A Student Film
FADE IN:
INT. IRON PRAIRIE FITNESS – EARLY MORNING
Fluorescent lights hum like a swarm of very tired bees. The linoleum is scuffed, and a motivational poster of a kitten on a pull-up bar reads "HANG IN THERE," faded to the color of weak tea.
MAX DELGADO (late 20s, wiry, glasses, neon-yellow staff polo tucked in with real conviction) strides across the floor with a clipboard and a whistle. He is the supervisor of this gym. He would like you to know that.
MAX
Alright, listen up! No deadlifts near the water fountain. No protein shakes by the ellipticals. And if I catch one more person doing curls in the squat rack, it's game over. Got it?
Nobody has got it.
CAMERON (24, frosted tips, phone permanently at selfie height) films himself mid-bicep curl while early-2000s rap blasts from a Bluetooth speaker clipped to his waistband.
KYLE (25, golden retriever in human form) bounces between sets, delivering an unsolicited speech to MRS. HALVERSON (70s), who is walking very slowly on a treadmill.
KYLE
Your legs? Engines. Your lungs? Turbochargers. You, Mrs. H? You're a Ferrari.
MRS. HALVERSON
I'm here for the air conditioning, dear.
TONY (26, built like a vending machine, sunglasses indoors) poses near the mirror and practices a dance move with suspicious precision.
CAMERON
(smirking)
Bro, I got ten DMs about your last reel. You're turning these housewives' husbands into NPCs.
TONY
Jealousy is a weak man's disease, Cam. Some of us got charisma.
A 45-pound plate slips off a bar behind Max. CLANG. A plume of chalk dust drifts through the air like a tiny, judgmental cloud.
Max pinches the bridge of his nose.
MAX
(muttering)
Professionalism. Somebody in this building has heard of it.
INT. STAFF BREAK ROOM – CONTINUOUS
The break room looks like a protein bar exploded and nobody filed a report. Shaker bottles, wrappers, and a tower of pre-workout tubs lean at an angle that defies physics.
The boys play poker. The chips are cheddar rice crisps. Somebody is losing badly and eating the evidence.
KYLE
We should launch our own pre-workout. Call it "Wolf Mode." Neon wolf, howling on the label.
CAMERON
(pacing, hyped)
Exclusive. You need a code. No code? You're not alpha enough to sip.
Tony pulls a gold chain from his gym bag and drapes it around his neck with ceremonial reverence.
TONY
My power piece. For the Wolf Mode photoshoots.
Max leans in the doorway, arms folded.
MAX
Hypothetically, what happens when the owner finds out you're running a protein cartel out of her dumbbell rack?
TONY
We cut her in. Shark Tank strategy, brother.
The room erupts. Max tries not to smile. He fails. It's not the gym he pictured running, but it has a heartbeat, and these idiots are the muscle.
INT. IRON PRAIRIE FITNESS – FRONT DESK – LATER
Max laminates a sign: "TOWELS MUST BE RETURNED BY 8 PM SHARP OR THERE WILL BE CONSEQUENCES." He holds it up, admiring it.
MAX
(to the empty lobby)
Consequences.
Nobody reacts. The laminator beeps in solidarity.
The front doors SWING open. A gust of wind. Somewhere, a car alarm goes off, as if on cue.
LIV SHIMMERMORE (late 20s) sashays in. Oversized sunglasses perched on her head. Vintage pink velour track jacket. A bedazzled water bottle held aloft like a Grammy she technically never won. She pauses in the doorway, waiting for a reaction that never comes.
She waits a little longer. Still nothing.
LIV
(lowering her sunglasses)
Hi. Yeah. It's me.
MAX
...Okay.
LIV
Do you guys do trainers? I'm looking for something vibey. Cosmic stretches meets rebooted self. You know. My vibe.
She holds up her phone. On screen: a painfully blurry workout video. It may be yoga. It may be a woman falling down a staircase in slow motion.
Max blinks.
MAX
We have treadmills?
LIV
(nodding like that's profound)
Love that. Very grounded. Very "the people."
She signs the clipboard with a flourish, then hands it back with the cap off the pen, which she keeps.
LIV (CONT'D)
I'll need somewhere private to change. Paparazzi are relentless.
She glides toward the locker room. Max looks out the front window at the parking lot. One truck. One pigeon. The pigeon is not a photographer.
INT. STAFF BREAK ROOM – MOMENTS LATER
The boys swarm Max.
TONY
Bro. BRO. Do you know who that is?
MAX
A woman who stole my pen.
TONY
That's Liv Shimmermore. "Glitter on the Dashboard." Summer 2003. That song was my whole seventh grade.
He sings, badly but with total commitment.
TONY (CONT'D)
"Glitter on the dashboard, baby, light me up like a disco ball—"
KYLE
(joining in)
"—I'm a superstar in a shopping mall!"
Max opens his laptop. Types. The screen fills with a 2003 music video: Liv in a sequined halter top on the hood of a convertible.
Below it: "WHERE ARE THEY NOW? (THE ANSWER WILL SURPRISE YOU)" with a stock photo of a different woman.
CAMERON
(reading over his shoulder)
Last chart appearance, 2003. Last TV spot, 2006 — "Celebrity Pancake Flip-Off." She came in fourth.
KYLE
Out of how many?
CAMERON
Four.
A beat.
MAX
She asked about paparazzi. She thinks she's still...
TONY
Famous.
KYLE
(hushed, horrified)
Does she not know?
The boys stare at each other. Through the break room window, Liv takes a selfie with the water fountain and blows it a kiss.
MAX
Okay. Official policy: we tell her, kindly and professionally—
KYLE
Absolutely not.
MAX
Kyle.
KYLE
Max. That woman walked in here like the Queen of England. You want to be the guy who tells the Queen there's no England?
TONY
Under no circumstances do we crush that woman's dreams. This rule isn't negotiable.
CAMERON
I can run a fan account. Ten thousand followers by Friday. Bots, mostly. But loyal bots.
Max looks at Liv through the glass. She's attempting a lunge. She's losing.
He sighs the sigh of a man who has already lost this argument.
MAX
Fine. We play along. Temporarily.
The boys fist-bump. Max does not fist-bump. Kyle fist-bumps Max's clipboard instead.
MONTAGE – THE UNLIKELY FRIENDSHIP BEGINS
— Liv attempts a dramatic stretch sequence while Max demonstrates proper form. She slips mid-lunge. Twice. The second time, she turns it into a curtsy.
— Liv lounges in the front desk chair, legs up, coaching Max on how to "project confidence" while he wipes down a sweaty rowing machine.
LIV
Chin up. Shoulders back. Pretend the machine owes you money.
— Liv yanks the treadmill's emergency cord mid-TikTok, belting the first line of "Glitter on the Dashboard" as she flies off the back. Max catches her water bottle before it hits the floor. He quietly saves the blooper video to a folder labeled "DO NOT DELETE."
— Cameron, hidden behind a stack of yoga mats, posts a grainy photo of Liv to his new account: @ShimmerNation_Official. Caption: "QUEEN SPOTTED 👑 #LivIsBack.
INT. IRON PRAIRIE FITNESS – STORAGE CLOSET – DAY
A cramped closet stuffed with mops, kettlebells, and a broken StairMaster. Tony and Kyle tape a hand-drawn star to the door.
It reads: "GREEN ROOM." The "G" is backwards.
KYLE
Does it say green room, or "reen room"?
TONY
It says "you're welcome."
Liv arrives, inspects it like a hotel critic, and clutches her chest.
LIV
A dressing room? For me?
TONY
Only the best for the Shimmer.
LIV
(pulling a folded sheet from her jacket)
Great. Here's my rider.
Max takes it. Reads aloud.
MAX
"Room-temperature sparkling water. Only blue M&Ms. One candle that smells like 'a rich man's sweater.' A personal assistant, a bodyguard, and a hype man."
He looks up.
MAX (CONT'D)
We are a gym. In a strip mall. Next to a Payless that closed in 2017.
KYLE
(stepping forward, chest out)
I'll be the bodyguard.
CAMERON
I'll be the assistant.
TONY
I was born a hype man.
Liv beams, then turns to Max with an expectant look.
MAX
I... will keep doing my job.
LIV
Perfect. You can be my manager.
MAX
That's not—
LIV
Manager Max. It's a whole alliteration. Fans love alliteration.
She enters the closet and shuts the door. A kettlebell falls. A muffled "I'm okay!"
Max stares at the rider. Then he looks at Kyle, already sorting M&Ms by color into a shaker bottle with surgical focus
EXT. HOMETOWN GROCERY – PARKING LOT – DAY
Simple life, take one.
Liv steps out of Kyle's mom's minivan wearing a giant sun hat. Kyle exits the driver's side in a black suit two sizes too small and an earpiece made out of a phone charger.
KYLE
(into his wrist)
Shimmer is on the move. Repeat, Shimmer is on the move.
CAMERON (O.S.)
(through a walkie-talkie)
Copy. Also, can you grab string cheese?
INT. HOMETOWN GROCERY – CONTINUOUS
Liv strolls the produce aisle as if it were a red carpet. She picks up a cantaloupe and waves at a stock boy.
The stock boy does not wave back.
Kyle shoots a look at Tony, posing as a shopper behind the bananas. Tony slides a twenty to the CASHIER, DOREEN (60s, unimpressed by everything since 1985).
TONY
(whispering)
Just scream a little.
DOREEN
What kind of scream?
TONY
Joyful. Like you won a boat.
Liv arrives at the register. Doreen looks at her. Looks at the twenty. Sighs.
DOREEN
(monotone)
Oh my goodness. It's you. From the song.
LIV
(delighted)
It's me! From the song!
DOREEN
I'm so... excited.
LIV
Do you want an autograph?
DOREEN
Not really.
Tony coughs loudly from the bananas.
DOREEN (CONT'D)
I mean, yes. I'll treasure it forever.
Liv signs the receipt with a heart over the "i." Doreen tapes it to the register next to a sign that reads "WE DO NOT ACCEPT CHECKS."
On the way out, Liv tries to pay with an American Express card that expired in 2009. Max, hovering by the carts, quietly swipes his own debit card.
LIV
Manager Max! You came!
MAX
I was... in the area. Buying... carts.
INT. IRON PRAIRIE FITNESS – FRONT DESK – DAY
Simple life, take two.
Liv volunteers to "help out" at the front desk. She answers the phone.
LIV
(into phone)
Shimmer Hotline, who's this?
A pause.
LIV (CONT'D)
No, I don't know what our hours are. Do I look like a clock?
She hangs up. Max takes the phone back.
MAX
We say, "Iron Prairie Fitness, how can I help you?"
LIV
That's not a brand, Max. That's a hostage statement.
A MEMBER approaches with a towel.
LIV (CONT'D)
Oh, you want me to sign that?
MEMBER
I want to return it.
LIV
(signing it anyway)
To Gary. Stay shimmery.
MEMBER
My name's Phil.
LIV
(handing it back)
Not anymore.
Max grabs the towel and drops it in the bin. It's 7:59 PM. He checks his watch. He nods. Rules were followed.
INT. STAFF BREAK ROOM – NIGHT
Cameron sits at a laptop surrounded by Red Bull cans, scrolling @ShimmerNation_Official. He frowns.
CAMERON
Uh, guys? Come look at this.
The boys crowd in. Max leans over Cameron's shoulder.
On screen: a stream of comments from accounts with no profile pictures. All different names. All the same tone.
"SHE HAD HER TURN."
"THE SILENCE IS COMING."
"NEON NIGHT WILL BE HER LAST NOTE."
Each one is signed with the same symbol: a speaker with a red X through it.
KYLE
Okay, that's spooky. Is that a band?
CAMERON
(clicking)
It's a group. They call themselves the Quiet Front. Anti-pop people. They think early-2000s music "rotted the nation's brain." They've harassed, like, three former boy bands. One guy in Ohio had to change his name.
TONY
That's insane. That decade was a cultural treasure.
MAX
Neon Night. What's Neon Night?
Silence. Then all three boys slowly turn toward a flyer on the corkboard. Pink. Glittery. Handmade.
"NEON NIGHT AEROBICS! FEATURING A VERY SPECIAL LIVE PERFORMANCE BY... LIV SHIMMERMORE!!! THIS SATURDAY!!!"
MAX (CONT'D)
When did she put that up?
KYLE
Tuesday. She made me laminate it. She said you'd be proud.
Max is, briefly, a little proud. Then he isn't.
MAX
Okay. We call the police.
INT. TOWN POLICE STATION – DAY
A small-town station. One fern. One coffee machine. One officer.
OFFICER DEB PRUITT (50s, reading glasses on a beaded chain) looks over Cameron's printouts.
OFFICER DEB
So we've got mean comments on the internet.
MAX
Threatening comments.
OFFICER DEB
Sweetie, if I arrested everyone who was threatening on the internet, I'd have to arrest my sister-in-law over a casserole review.
MAX
They're targeting a specific event. With a specific person.
OFFICER DEB
Bring me something real. A name. A plan. Something I can hand to the county. Then we'll talk.
She returns to her crossword.
OFFICER DEB (CONT'D)
Seven letters. "Pop star who peaked early."
The boys freeze.
OFFICER DEB (CONT'D)
Oh, never mind. "Britney." No, that's six.
EXT. IRON PRAIRIE FITNESS – PARKING LOT – DAY
The boys huddle by the dumpster like a team about to run a very bad play.
MAX
So we need evidence. Quietly. And under no circumstances does Liv find out.
TONY
Why not?
MAX
Because she thinks a cashier screaming at her is fame. You want to tell her an actual hate group thinks she's important enough to stop?
KYLE
(slowly)
Wait. Would that make her happy?
A long beat. Everyone considers it.
MAX
We are not telling her.
CAMERON
Agreed.
TONY
Wolf Mode, boys. Investigation edition.
He puts on the gold chain. Nobody questions this.
MONTAGE – THE WORST SURVEILLANCE TEAM IN AMERICA
— Kyle and Tony stake out the gym parking lot from Kyle's mom's minivan, eating string cheese. The windows fog up. They draw a wolf in the fog.
— Cameron runs the Quiet Front comments through a spreadsheet. Color-coded. Max looks at it, impressed despite himself.
MAX
You did a pivot table?
CAMERON
I'm a social media guru, Max. I contain multitudes.
— Max reviews the gym's sign-in sheets with a highlighter. One name jumps out. "D. WRENFIELD." Signs in every day at 2 PM. Never seems to sweat.
— Liv, oblivious, walks by the minivan, spots Kyle in his tiny suit, and waves.
LIV
My bodyguard! Off the clock and still protecting me. Iconic.
Kyle waves back. He's wearing a fake mustache. It falls off.
INT. IRON PRAIRIE FITNESS – WEIGHT FLOOR – 2:00 PM
DESMOND WRENFIELD (40s, gray windbreaker, noise-canceling headphones, the energy of a man who has filed a complaint about a wind chime) walks in on a stationary bike and pedals without effort. He doesn't sweat. He doesn't blink. He takes notes in a small black notebook.
Max watches from behind the front desk, pretending to staple something. He staples his sleeve to the counter.
Liv bounces past Desmond, humming her song. Desmond's pen stops. His jaw tightens.
She stops, smiles, offers him a fist bump.
LIV
Big fan of your silent intensity. Very Bourne Identity.
Desmond stares at her fist. Doesn't bump it. Liv bumps her own fist against her other fist and keeps walking.
LIV (CONT'D)
(over her shoulder)
Shy ones are always my biggest fans.
Desmond writes something down. Underlines it twice.
INT. MEN'S LOCKER ROOM – LATER
Max and Tony stand in front of Locker 14. Desmond's locker.
MAX
Okay. Gym policy states staff may inspect lockers if there is "reasonable concern for safety or hygiene."
TONY
Is this safety or hygiene?
MAX
At this gym? Always both.
Max opens the locker with the master key. Inside: a gray gym bag. Tony unzips it.
Inside, nothing fitness-related. No shoes. No towel. A folder. Max opens it.
A floor plan of Iron Prairie Fitness, with the stage area for Neon Night circled in red. Times written in the margins. A printed photo of Liv from 2003, the red X symbol drawn over her mouth. And a typed note: "SATURDAY. MAIN NUMBER. THE SILENCE BEGINS."
TONY
(whispering)
That's a terrorist plot.
MAX
That's a terrorist plot.
TONY
Against "Glitter on the Dashboard."
MAX
Against Liv.
Max snaps photos with his phone, hands shaking. Tony zips the bag. They close the locker.
The locker room door CREAKS.
They freeze.
It's MRS. HALVERSON, holding a towel.
MRS. HALVERSON
Wrong room. Don't tell anyone.
She leaves. The boys exhale.
INT. TOWN POLICE STATION – LATER
Officer Deb studies the photos on Max's phone. She takes off her reading glasses. Puts them back on. Takes them off again.
OFFICER DEB
Well. Now I've got something real.
She picks up a desk phone, the kind with a spiral cord.
OFFICER DEB (CONT'D)
(into phone)
Hey, Gil. It's Deb. Yeah, put the county on. And the state folks. Tell 'em it's about the Quiet Front.
She covers the receiver.
OFFICER DEB (CONT'D)
(to the boys)
You did good. Now here's what happens. We watch him. We let the event go forward so we can catch him and whoever he's working with. Nobody plays hero.
KYLE
Define "hero."
OFFICER DEB
Anything you're thinking of doing right now.
MAX
And Liv?
OFFICER DEB
Does she know?
MAX
No. And she can't.
Deb studies him. Something softens.
OFFICER DEB
You're sweet on her.
MAX
I'm her manager.
OFFICER DEB
Uh-huh. And I'm Britney.
INT. IRON PRAIRIE FITNESS – POOL – NIGHT
After hours. The pool glows a soft, flickering blue. Liv and Max sit on the edge, feet in the water. The place feels sacred in its stillness, if sacred smelled faintly of chlorine and someone's forgotten flip-flop.
Liv picks at the sequins on her water bottle.
LIV
(softly)
Can I tell you something?
MAX
Always.
LIV
They told me I peaked at 22. My old label. Like the best of me is in a drawer somewhere, next to a CD-ROM of the "Glitter" video.
Max stays quiet. Lets her talk.
LIV (CONT'D)
Sometimes I walk into a room and I wait for people to look. And when they do, I'm fine. And when they don't...
She doesn't finish. She doesn't have to.
Max hesitates. Then:
MAX
Well, the guys here think I peaked the day I yelled at someone for curling on the leg press. Loudly. With a whistle.
LIV
(smiling despite herself)
Did you peak?
MAX
I'm figuring stuff out. I think you can peak more than once. Like a mountain range.
LIV
Or a heart monitor.
MAX
Let's go with mountain range.
Liv laughs. Real laughter, not the red-carpet version. Her sunglasses lie forgotten on the tile beside her.
LIV
You know, you're kind of weird.
MAX
Thank you?
LIV
But you're my kind of weird.
Max looks at her. Then at the water. Somewhere in his chest, a towel policy gets tossed out the window.
INT. STAFF BREAK ROOM – THE NEXT MORNING
Officer Deb sits at the break-room table, surrounded by rice crisps and shaker bottles. A whiteboard behind her reads "WOLF MODE: PHASE TWO" in Tony's handwriting. Underneath: a drawing of a wolf in a police hat.
OFFICER DEB
Who drew the wolf?
TONY
Me. He's on your side.
OFFICER DEB
(not entirely displeased)
Alright. Here's the plan. My people will be in plain clothes. Wrenfield shows up Saturday. We keep eyes on him. When he moves toward that stage, we stop him. Quietly. Out back.
MAX
And the show goes on.
OFFICER DEB
The show goes on. Your girl won't know a thing.
MAX
She's not my—
EVERYONE
Sure.
OFFICER DEB
Your job? Keep the event normal. Keep her happy. Keep her on that stage and away from that back alley.
KYLE
(saluting)
Bodyguard duty. Born for it.
CAMERON
I'll monitor online chatter.
TONY
I'll hype.
OFFICER DEB
You'll what?
TONY
I'll hype, ma'am. Crowd energy is a security asset.
Deb opens her mouth to argue. Closes it. Writes "HYPE (TONY)" on the whiteboard.
INT. IRON PRAIRIE FITNESS – WEIGHT FLOOR – DAY
Liv commands the gym like a general. String lights, disco balls, and a fog machine borrowed from the high school drama department crowd the floor. She clutches a clipboard. Max's clipboard. Max does not remember giving it to her.
LIV
Okay, team. Neon Night. Theme: Walkman. Energy: sparkle. Vibe: comeback.
KYLE
(raising hand)
Is it a comeback if you never left?
LIV
(touched)
Kyle. That's the nicest thing anyone's ever said to me.
Max carries a box of glow sticks past Desmond, who pedals his bike in the corner, eyes on the stage.
Desmond glances at Max. Max smiles, the smile of a man trying very hard to look like he hasn't seen your secret folder.
MAX
Coming Saturday? Great music. Great... energy.
DESMOND
(flat)
I'll be there.
MAX
(too loud)
GREAT.
Desmond goes back to pedaling. Max walks away and trips over an extension cord. The glow sticks go everywhere.
MONTAGE – THE GROWING CONNECTION
— Max sneaks "Glitter on the Dashboard" onto the gym playlist. Liv hears the opening chords from the treadmill. She smirks. She doesn't look over. She absolutely knows.
— Liv critiques Max's wardrobe before his LinkedIn headshot. She swaps his polo for a denim jacket and musses his hair. He looks cooler. Still Max. Max-adjacent cool.
LIV
Lose the whistle.
MAX
The whistle is part of my brand.
LIV
Then lean in. Whistle as accessory.
— Midnight vending-machine snacks in the gym office, the two of them sitting cross-legged on the floor and arguing about which boy band truly defined the late 90s.
LIV
It's not even a debate.
MAX
It's always a debate.
LIV
That's why you're single.
MAX
That's why I'm employed.
— Meanwhile: Kyle, Tony, and Cameron rehearse "crowd energy" in the parking lot. They practice screaming. A neighbor calls the police. Officer Deb answers. She hangs up without comment
INT. IRON PRAIRIE FITNESS – POOL – NIGHT (THE NIGHT BEFORE)
The pool flickers. Liv sits alone on the edge, mascara lightly smeared, shoulders slumped. Her phone glows beside her.
On screen: an email from STARGLOW INDIE RECORDS. "Thanks, but we're not looking for nostalgia acts at this time."
Max finds her. He's holding two bags of vending-machine pretzels.
He sits. Hands her one. She doesn't open it.
LIV
(not looking at him)
"Nostalgia act." Like I'm a lunch box. Like I come with a thermos.
MAX
For the record, I'd buy that lunch box.
She laughs, wet and small.
LIV
I just thought... if I did Neon Night, and it was good, maybe somebody would see it. Somebody who matters.
Max looks at her for a long time. He thinks about the folder in Locker 14. The red X over her mouth. Officer Deb's spiral-cord phone. Kyle's tiny suit.
He thinks about telling her. He doesn't.
MAX
Okay. So maybe this isn't your next big thing.
Liv winces.
MAX (CONT'D)
But you give this place its heartbeat. Before you came in, the most exciting thing here was the laminator.
LIV
The laminator is very exciting.
MAX
It is. You're more exciting.
He swallows.
MAX (CONT'D)
You're my favorite part of this job. Just saying.
Liv turns to him, startled. Her guard drops. Beneath the pool's flickering light, the quiet between them says more than either of them could.
She leans in. So does Max. Their kiss is tentative. A little awkward. Somebody's pretzel bag crinkles. It doesn't need to be perfect. It's real.
They pull apart.
LIV
(whispering)
Was that in your job description?
MAX
(whispering)
I'll update it.
INT. IRON PRAIRIE FITNESS – NEON NIGHT – EVENING
The gym has transformed. String lights crisscross the ceiling. Disco balls rotate. The fog machine wheezes pink haze. Treadmills are pushed to the walls; the weight floor is a dance floor.
A sign at the door reads: "NEON NIGHT — LIVE PERFORMANCE BY LIV SHIMMERMORE — TOWELS MUST BE RETURNED BY 8 PM."
Max added the last part. He regrets nothing.
The crowd is a beautiful mess: suburban moms in leg warmers, high schoolers in thrifted windbreakers, Mrs. Halverson in a neon sweatband, and Doreen the cashier, who looks like she was promised a boat.
Scattered among them: PLAINCLOTHES OFFICERS, unmistakable in khakis and the stiff posture of people who don't do aerobics.
Officer Deb, wearing a sequined headband over her serious face, stands by the juice bar.
OFFICER DEB
(into a hidden mic)
Eyes on the door.
INT. STORAGE CLOSET / "GREEN ROOM" – SAME
Liv stands in front of a cracked mirror, adjusting a silver jacket. Cameron fluffs her hair. Kyle guards the door in his tiny suit.
LIV
How's the crowd?
CAMERON
(checking his phone, where the Quiet Front's latest post reads "TONIGHT.")
Electric.
LIV
Any press?
CAMERON
(glancing at Tony through the door, who holds a disposable camera)
Tons.
Liv takes a deep breath. Grabs Kyle's hand.
LIV
Thank you. All of you. I know I'm a lot.
KYLE
(earnest)
You're exactly the right amount.
INT. IRON PRAIRIE FITNESS – MAIN FLOOR – CONTINUOUS
Max stands at the back near the emergency exit, clipboard in hand, whistle around his neck. His earpiece is the phone-charger kind. Deb gave him a real one. He wore both.
The front doors open. Desmond Wrenfield enters. Gray windbreaker. Gym bag. Headphones.
He scans the crowd. Moves toward the side hallway leading to the back of the stage.
MAX
(into earpiece, too loud)
He's here. He's moving. He's wearing the windbreaker.
OFFICER DEB (V.O.)
(through earpiece)
Max, you don't have to yell. It's an earpiece.
MAX
(whispering now)
He's wearing the windbreaker.
INT. IRON PRAIRIE FITNESS – STAGE – CONTINUOUS
The lights dim. Tony grabs a mic and steps onto the stage, gold chain gleaming, sunglasses on.
TONY
Ladies and gentlemen! Moms, dads, Mrs. Halverson! Are you ready for the one... the only... the dashboard DIVA...
The crowd half-cheers. Tony points at Kyle, who points at the moms, who point at Doreen. Doreen sighs and SCREAMS like she won a boat.
The crowd catches on. They roar.
TONY (CONT'D)
LIV! SHIMMERMORE!
Liv bursts through the fog. The opening chords of "Glitter on the Dashboard" kick in. She hits the first note.
It's not perfect. It's better. It's big and warm and a little ridiculous, and the whole gym moves.
INT. SIDE HALLWAY – CONTINUOUS
Desmond moves past the trophy case toward a door marked "STAFF ONLY — STAGE ACCESS." He reaches into his gym bag.
A hand lands on his shoulder.
It's Kyle. Tiny suit. Fake mustache, reattached.
KYLE
Sir, this area is staff only.
DESMOND
I'm with the sound crew.
KYLE
We don't have a sound crew. We have Cameron's Bluetooth speaker.
Desmond shoves Kyle aside and bolts for the back door.
KYLE
(into his wrist)
Runner! We got a runner!
EXT. ALLEY BEHIND IRON PRAIRIE FITNESS – NIGHT
A narrow, wet alley. Brick walls with peeling flyers. A green dumpster. Metal trash cans. The streetlight hums like an overcaffeinated mosquito.
Desmond explodes through the back door and runs.
Max is already there.
He stands in the middle of the alley, backlit by the streetlight, clipboard in one hand. Somehow, at this moment, Max looks like a movie poster.
DESMOND
Move.
MAX
Sir, I'm going to need you to stop.
DESMOND
Or what? You'll laminate me?
MAX
(beat)
I have considered it.
Desmond charges. Max does not move. He's terrified. He doesn't move anyway.
At the last second, a metal trash can lid skids across the wet asphalt from the side, launched like a frisbee. It catches Desmond's ankle. He stumbles.
Tony steps out from behind the dumpster, gold chain swinging.
TONY
Wolf Mode.
Kyle bursts from the back door and executes a flawless, very loud tackle into a pile of recycling bags. Cardboard explodes.
Desmond's gym bag skids across the pavement. Max puts his foot on the strap.
MAX
Under no circumstances are you touching this bag again.
Officer Deb and three plainclothes officers flood the alley, sequined headband still on.
OFFICER DEB
Desmond Wrenfield, you're under arrest.
The officers cuff him. Two others carefully take the gym bag and back away from it, the way people do when they know exactly what they're handling.
DESMOND
(as he's dragged away)
That song is a crime against music! Do you hear me? A crime!
TONY
(calling after him)
That song is a national treasure, my guy!
Through the brick wall, faintly, the crowd sings the chorus. "I'm a superstar in a shopping mall!"
Officer Deb turns to Max, hands on her hips.
OFFICER DEB
I said nobody plays hero.
MAX
I didn't. I stood there.
OFFICER DEB
That's what heroes do, Max. They just stand there, looking nervous. It's very effective.
Her radio crackles.
OFFICER (V.O.)
Got the two others at the van out front. Same symbol on the dashboard. Quiet Front's done.
OFFICER DEB
(into radio)
Copy. Keep the lights off. There's a show going on.
INT. IRON PRAIRIE FITNESS – STAGE – CONTINUOUS
Liv belts the final chorus. The crowd jumps. Confetti — a gift from the closed Payless, raided earlier — rains down. Doreen is crying a little. She looks surprised about it.
From the stage, Liv spots Max slipping back in through the side door. His hair's wet. His polo's untucked. There's cardboard in his collar.
She points at him, still singing, and beckons.
He shakes his head. She beckons harder.
He walks up. She grabs his arm and pulls him into the dance break. He dances like a folding chair being opened for the first time. She doesn't care. Their eyes meet in the pink fog.
The song ends. The crowd ROARS.
Liv bows. Then she whispers to Max, breathless.
LIV
Did you hear sirens? I swear I heard sirens.
MAX
Fans. Very excited fans.
LIV
(glowing)
I knew it.
INT. STAFF BREAK ROOM – LATER THAT NIGHT
The boys collapse into chairs. Kyle picks cardboard out of his mustache. Tony polishes his chain. Cameron scrolls his phone.
CAMERON
The Quiet Front's pages are down. Every account. Gone.
KYLE
So it's over?
MAX
It's over.
TONY
And she doesn't know.
MAX
She doesn't know.
A pause. Then Tony raises a shaker bottle.
TONY
To Wolf Mode.
ALL
To Wolf Mode.
They clink. Kyle's shaker cracks. Pre-workout everywhere. Nobody cares.
Cameron's phone pings. He looks down. His eyes go wide.
CAMERON
Uh. Guys.
He turns the screen around. Someone in the crowd filmed Liv's performance. It's on social media. 400,000 views. Climbing.
Top comment: "WHY DOES THIS SLAP HARDER THAN IT DID IN 2003."
Second comment: "the guy in the polo dancing like a lawn chair is my new religion."
MAX
Oh no.
TONY
(reverent)
Oh yes.
INT. IRON PRAIRIE FITNESS – FRONT DESK – THE NEXT MORNING
Liv strolls in, sunglasses on, holding two coffees. She hands one to Max.
LIV
So, funny story. I got an email this morning.
MAX
Starglow?
LIV
Starglow can kiss my dashboard. No. A little label in Nashville. They saw the video. They want to talk about a "reimagined" version of the song. Acoustic. Grown-up.
MAX
Liv, that's amazing.
LIV
I know. They said it was "surprisingly sincere."
She sips her coffee. Then, almost casually:
LIV (CONT'D)
Weird week, though. You ever feel like... someone's looking out for you? And you don't know who?
Max freezes. Over her shoulder, the boys watch from the break room window. Tony mouths "DON'T." Kyle mouths "TELL HER." Cameron mouths "CHEESE?" Nobody knows why.
MAX
(carefully)
I think you've got a lot of people looking out for you.
LIV
(smiling)
Fans.
MAX
Fans.
She leans over the desk and kisses his cheek.
LIV
My favorite fan, though? Wears a whistle.
She heads for the green room. The "G" on the door is still backwards. She's grown to love it.
MONTAGE – SIX MONTHS LATER
— Liv records "Glitter on the Dashboard (Acoustic)" in a small Nashville studio. Max sits on the floor with a clipboard, taking notes no one asked for.
— Wolf Mode Pre-Workout hits the shelves of exactly one store: Hometown Grocery. Doreen stocks it with zero enthusiasm. It sells out in an hour.
— Officer Deb receives a commendation from the county. She wears the sequined headband to the ceremony.
— Liv teaches a "Cosmic Stretches" class at Iron Prairie. Mrs. Halverson attends every week. She still mostly comes for the air conditioning.
— Max, in his updated LinkedIn headshot, denim jacket on, whistle still visible. Liv was right. Whistle as accessory.
EXT. SMALL-TOWN CHURCH – DAY
Sunlight pours through stained glass. The pews are packed with family, friends, and a remarkable number of bemused gym members in their best athleisure.
At the altar: Max, in a tux, glasses polished, no whistle. Okay, the whistle is in his pocket.
Groomsmen: Kyle (suit that finally fits), Tony (gold chain over his tie), and Cameron (filming everything for @ShimmerNation_Official, now a real fan account with real followers).
Officer Deb sits in the front row. Doreen sits next to her. Both are crying. Both are annoyed about it.
The doors open. Liv walks down the aisle in a white gown, with a pink velour track jacket draped over her shoulders.
A small choir hums a soft, slow version of "Glitter on the Dashboard."
Max's breath catches.
INT. SMALL-TOWN CHURCH – ALTAR – MOMENTS LATER
The OFFICIANT nods to Liv.
LIV
Max. When I walked into your gym, I thought I was the star. Turns out, I was just the girl who couldn't do a lunge.
Light laughter.
LIV (CONT'D)
You never once made me feel small. You let me be big when I needed to be. And you let me be real when I didn't know how. I don't know how you did it. But I felt it. Every day.
Max swallows hard. The boys exchange a look. A tiny, proud, secret look.
MAX
Liv. I had a lot of rules before you showed up. Towel rules. Squat-rack rules. Laminated rules.
LIV
So many rules.
MAX
You broke every one of them. And somehow, everything got better.
He takes her hands.
MAX (CONT'D)
I promise to look out for you. Always. Even when you don't know I'm doing it.
Liv tilts her head, curious. Max just smiles.
OFFICIANT
You may kiss the bride.
They kiss. The church erupts. Tony stands on the pew and shouts "WOLF MODE!" Mrs. Halverson blows a whistle she smuggled in. Doreen screams like she finally won the boat.
They pull apart. Max looks at Liv. Cracks a small, crooked grin.
MAX
For the record, I liked the velour tracksuit better than the dress.
Liv throws her head back and laughs.
EXT. SMALL-TOWN CHURCH – STEPS – CONTINUOUS
The newlyweds run down the steps through a shower of glitter. Pink, silver, absurd. Cameron got it from the Payless stash. There's still a lot left.
Kyle, Tony, and Cameron hang back at the top of the steps, watching.
KYLE
Think she'll ever find out?
TONY
About the Quiet Front? The stakeout? The tackle into the recycling?
CAMERON
The fake fans?
They watch Liv twirl at the bottom of the steps, waving to a crowd that actually knows her name.
KYLE
(softly)
They're not fake anymore.
A beat.
TONY
Nah. She'll never know.
CAMERON
Best-kept secret in Iron Prairie.
The boys bump fists. Officer Deb walks past, sunglasses on, and bumps fists with all three without stopping.
INT. LIMO – MOMENTS LATER
Liv leans against Max, kicking off her heels.
LIV
Hey. Neon Night. Did anything weird happen? Out back?
Max looks at her. At the glitter in her hair. At the jacket.
MAX
Just one thing.
LIV
What?
MAX
Somebody returned a towel at 8:02.
LIV
(gasping)
No.
MAX
There were consequences.
She laughs and pulls him in. The limo pulls away. "Glitter on the Dashboard (Acoustic)" swells.
FADE OUT.
OVER CREDITS:
Blooper reel. Liv flying off the treadmill. Kyle's mustache falling off for the fourth time. Tony slipping on a puddle of pre-workout. Max stapling his own sleeve to the desk. Doreen staring straight into the camera, unimpressed.
Final card, white text on pink:
"NO POP STARS WERE HARMED IN THE MAKING OF THIS FILM. ONE TOWEL WAS RETURNED LATE."
THE END.
