Grand Finale in Fruit and Veggies

By Lucas, age 6

Hello! My name is Lucas and I am six years old. Today I want to tell everybody about fruits and vegetables because they are super duper good for you! My daddy says they help me grow big and strong like Superman!

Every morning, my daddy makes me a smoothie with bananas and strawberries. He says the bananas have something called po-tass-ee-um that makes my legs run fast on the playground. I love to race with my friend Ethan, and I always win because of my banana power!

My grandpa has a garden in his backyard where he grows carrots and tomatoes. He lets me help pick them when they’re ready. Grandpa says tomatoes aren’t vegetables but they’re actually fruits! That was so surprising! He knows everything about plants because he’s been alive for a hundred years (that’s what I think, but Daddy laughs when I say that).

My uncle Mike brings oranges when he visits us. He peels them and they smell so good! He says oranges have vitamin C which keeps me from getting sick. I hate being sick because then I can’t go to school and play with my friends.

My teacher Mr. Johnson had us plant bean seeds in cups at school. We watched them grow every day! He said beans make our brains smart for doing math. I’m getting better at counting because I eat my green beans!

My big brother Sam used to hate broccoli. He called them little trees and wouldn’t eat them. But then Dad showed him that broccoli makes you have strong muscles like the Hulk! Now Sam eats broccoli all the time, and he can lift me up high!

My cousin Oliver showed me how to make a funny face with apple slices for the mouth and grape eyeballs. We laughed so hard! Then we ate our fruit faces. Oliver said apples clean your teeth like a toothbrush. That’s cool!

Sometimes when I’m at soccer practice, Coach Tony brings watermelon for everybody. He cuts it into big triangles and the juice drips down our chins. Coach says watermelon has lots of water to keep us from getting too hot when we play.

My neighbor Mr. Wilson is really old but still very strong. He eats spinach every day! He told me that’s why he can still mow his lawn and carry heavy bags. I didn’t like spinach before, but now I try to eat it because I want to be strong when I’m old too.

The doctor that I visit, Dr. Carlos, has a chart on his wall with all the colors of fruits and vegetables. He said we should eat a rainbow every day! Not a real rainbow, silly! But foods that are all different colors like red apples, orange carrots, yellow corn, green peas, blueberries, and purple grapes. He says each color does something special for our bodies.

So everybody should eat fruits and vegetables every single day! They can make you run fast, jump high, think smart, and grow strong! They taste yummy too, especially when you dip them in peanut butter or ranch dressing (that’s my favorite)!

My daddy says if we all ate more fruits and veggies, everyone would be healthier and happier. And I think my daddy is the smartest person ever, so he must be right!

The end!
